802.11 B/G DUAL BAND MINI PCI INTERNAL LAPTOP WIFI CARD *NEW*

Can this thing realy do this? "ATHEROS' EXTENDED RANGE (XR) TECHNOLOGY ENABLES COVERAGE UP TO 2/3 MILES"

Seems like a good deal

you'll find some good deals on ebay, but if you just want something right out of a company website; this is where to go; and this brand ain't cheap

hardcore dualband for laptopZ

My HP laptop has nic/modem combo card in a slot that looks like this would fit in. does anyone know if you can drop one of these in that slot and go?

standard ebay price. Will try on my p4 vpr matrix and let you guys know.

Might be fun to boot up a linux box and try this wep cracking thing (legally , on my on wep).

There's usually a spare mini PCI slot for the wireless cards. And even if you have that, you'll need an internal antenna. I've seen those added too, but you hafta remove the screen to do it.

well last time i checked some dell/hp/ibm models checked the rev of the card (bios) to prevent random cards being put in due to FCC Regulations.

also there are multiple sizes of the mini-pci cards in both thickness and how tall they air (the width is kinda the size of the pins).

so check out ebay first.

I'm gonna make it fit no matter what cause i want to see how weak my WEP really is.

B/G isn't dual band, they're both 2.4GHz.

A | B/G is dual band, one being 4.9 - 6.0 GHz and the other 2.4GHz.

G is OFDM + a few other bits over B, but certainly not any difference in band.

Thought wep crackers liked prism chipsets.

Prism 2 to be exact. Doesn't matter though, the top chipsets are Atheros, Prism 2, and Ralink.

If you're gonna get one just to see how "weak" your WEP really is, don't bother. 64-bit WEPs are cracked in ~10 minutes, 128-bit WEPs are done in about 25. There's no such thing as a strong WEP.

As Ereet1 said, most Dells and many other laptops (Recent HPs) only allow OEM wireless cards. My Dells and HP error and won't boot with another brand card in them.

Also, Does anyone know more about this card? The page says it does 5ghz too, but it does not mention 802.11a anywhere.

I bought the gigabyte gn-wiag02 from mwave.com . Its based on the newer ar5005 chipset rather than the ar5002 and cost only $21.

Anyone know if an IBM T40 with Centrino will allow a 3rd party card to be installed? It only has 802.11b right now...

Thanks!

How it is supposed to compare with the intel one? I bought one for my older gateway. but the intel chipset in my toshiba works better....

I speak from experience - most Dell BIOSes will throw an NMI if the PCI ID value that is returned is not of the same manufacturer (Broadcom, Atheros, Marvell etc) of the card that was initially put in. Buyer beware...

this card sucks in my vpr matrix laptop. i mean its nifty. but the netgeat wg311v2 can see about 8 other wap's, this internal one only sees the nearby ap's (mine).

i'd say range i'd give it a 3 out of 10 , with the netgear WG311 pcmcia a 10 out of 10.

it does free up the pcmcia slot so thats a big plug.

otherwise JUNK. this is a RANGE-MINUS product lol. and yeah i hooked up the antenna's right and set the power to 100% etc. the software is junk. they mail you the card in bubble wrap and the driver cd was cracked in half.

avoid this place. F- on shipping. C- on card quality.

I have to agree....the range is pretty bad in my Gateway laptop. When I put the laptop rigt next to the router, the strength is only at 79% to 85%. Also, my toshiba with the intel card sees more networks.

edit: I was also suprised when i saw the packaging and the personally burned "Utility disc". he could have atleast wrote in legible handwriting on the cd.
