800Mhz T'Bird And Disappointed...

Finally had a chance to screw around with overclocking this POS and have only been able to hit the 900's.

Working with an ASUS A7V133 has been easy with the pencil trick, but my best/slightly unstable top is 8.5x110 (146DRAM) CAS 2 @1.7V. Was able to hit 7x130 CAS2 @1.7V, but the Sandra scores were lower than 8.5x110.

I had hoped for at least in the 1000's/unstable, but I can't even get a F#$@ing POST. Is there anything I am doing wrong here? I have a high quality H/S with Arctic silver II, and heat is absolutely no problem so far. I have PC150 Kingmax RAM that seems to work good so far.

Am I destined to drink heavily because of this setback?

1.7v?

That is almost never enough. Most of my good overclocks take 1.8-1.85v

Good Cooling required.

I've had 800's that did not much over 900. That's the luck of the draw sometimes. ;)

Yeah, 1.70 is usually not going to be enough. 1.60 was enough for my Duron to go to 900 perfectly stable... but to go a gig and 1050... I had to raise it all the way to 1.85.

It's the luck of the draw with CPU's. My t-bird 750 is rocking at 1gig with a cheap heatsink and fan, while my buds is stuck at 950 with a fopp32.

did you try leaving the fsb alone and only playing with the multiplier? Raise your voltage

Do I need to do anything to the chip itself (i.e. bridge any contacts) in order to reach 1.85V? I'm going to be using an Asus A7V133 and a Duron 800.

Thanks!

Thanks to all for the responses.

I am in deep depression over this processor, after trying more voltage and still relegated to the mid-900's. Just the luck of the draw I guess, but the overclocking gods have denied me. Damn AMD and the AMD god.

My impressions of my overclocking experience are as follows:

1. Voltage on this POS 800 T'Bird means nothing. Setting it to default, or 1.85V doesn't give me anything extra.

2. The ASUS A7V133 mobo is an irritating bitch. Sometimes when I experiment with settings, the mobo goes nuts and I have to fool with it to get it to reset. When I get the European police siren, I have to open the case to reset the jumpers just to get it back to BIOS control of multiplier/frequency/voltage. Coming from ABIT mobo's that are not this strange, it pisses me off.

3. AMD T'Birds are a strange beast. Noisy H/S/F's, the need for a noisy exhaust fan for the case, the 4/1 drivers that are never current, all of this make me wish I bought Intel. Sorry to all of you AMD supporters...

i think the 800 chips dont oc as well as the others, i have a 750 running at 1.13. my firend has a 800 and he can only get 950, which isnt even that stable.
my 2 cents

What make is your HSF unit? I was using a fop32 on a A7V and 800 tbird. I always had to run at 1.85v. Same story. 950 was all she was going to give me with that setup.
So, got sick of that whole thing and got the 1gig. The first one i got would barely go to 1100. Second one got a little further (I work at a computer store). Next, got the KT7A-RAID. That beast got me to about 1066. SO THEN i splurged and bought a Kanie Hedgehog HSF with the delta fan and some Arctic Silver. Well that got me to 1200 but not until AFTER i updated to the WZ7-beta BIOS for the Abit.
So, now im on the 1200. Runs stable at 1333 with default voltage. But no matter what i try so far, i cannot get a stable 1400. I work with someone else that is running the A7V133 and a 1200 at 1400. He has two 120mm fans blowing out that carry the processor fan air with it.
I hope some of this helps you a bit. It is probably possible to get to 1000 but probably not worth the expense or the noise of all those fans. Maybe you will get lucky on your next processor. Otherwise, go with the Duron. At 1000mhz, they seem to perform almost identically to the PIII at 1000 and for a fraction of the price.
Dont give up on AMD. Whether you run at stock speed or not, their processors (Athlon and Duron) are the best you can get.

ok...the 800mhz tbird is even that good at ocing!
THe average i have seen is about 965 out of 237 of them tested...
But the hightest i have seen is 1250

The 750mhz oc's a lot better, besides ur 800mhz tbird is faster and cheaper than a 1 ghz pIII so be happy.

Interesting thing this morning. Since I can't leave this T'Bird 800 alone, I tried using the dip switches/jumpers i/o bios control. Got the bad boy to post and boot at 1G! Wasn't very stable, and bombed with Q3. Weird...

I am back at 8.5x110 full everything using the dip switches. BTW, I am using a nice H/S with Arctic Silver II. Temp no higher than 45C.

I've A7V133, Duron850 & 256Mb Micron PC133 CAS3

Tweaking with BIOS usually is not as good as dip-switches. So if you're having problem with BIOS overclocking, just disable the jumper-free mode and use the good old dip-switches.

You might want to even consider taking your voltage past 1.85 -- I've had my thunderbird 700 mhz processor running at 1050 mhz by virtue of 2.1 volts.

Still works after many months :D

cookj, what are the L7 briges and what do they do? I am familiar w/ the L1's as far as unlocking the multipiler, but had not heard of connecting L7's. I am getting a Duron 700 and plan to try some oc'ing with it. Plan to use a Thermaltake Mini Chrome Orb. This will be my first attempt.

How do you get higher than 1.85V?

I got an ASUS A7V133A. Wouldn't mind upping the voltage to see how high it flies.
