800MHz Processors worth the upgrade?

Hello,

I have a P4P800 on the way. My current P4 2.4 533MHz will do 3.0 and I'm already planning on shelling out around $400 for a RAM upgrade so I'm wondering if getting a 2.4C makes sense.

Let's assume that both a new 2.4c and my current 2.4 533 will both top out at the same speed (around 3.0GHz). Is the 2.4c a worthwhile upgrade? Will I see a noticeable increase in system speed with the 2.4c over my current processor?

Thanks!

You get a noticable speed boost, HT and the faster fsb does quite a bit. My 2.4C @ 2.94 was quite a bit faster than my 2.4B @ 3.06 according to all benchmarks and it could also be felt in everyday work.
But unless you've got money to burn or really, really want the newest it is not, the difference is there and is noticable but not THAT large. But if you're upgrading other parts anyway and have the cash go for it.

i would spend the money on a 2.6c and get a pair of corsair value select pc3200 ofcourse. I been running my fsb at 265 and memory at 215. y spend 400 all on ram? it doesn't make sense. memory bandwidth will not matter as much anymore after a certain point.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it. I'm still a little fuzzy on the FSB and ratios on the board. When you say you're at "265" that doesn't mean you are actually running your PC3200 at 265MHz, right? You're using a CPU/MEM ratio, correct?

I've gotten really spoiled on having at 1Gig RAM as I see quite a difference when running apps like Adobe Photoshop, which is a real memory hog. When I went from 512MB to 1Gig I saw a big reduction in load/save time.

It's pretty expensive to run in dual channel since you basically have to have twice the RAM! I can run with 2X512MB in one set of DIMMS and 2X256 in the other, right? I guess I can live with 768MB for a while.

The amount of memory in dual channel is still the sum of each module installed. Just like single channel. You just need two matching sticks in order to run dual channel. That's all.

when he said 265 thats his FSB (front side bus)
265 quad pumped gives him a FSB of 1060
his 5/4 cpu/mem ratio brings his mem down to 212
and yes u can run 2x256 in one set and 2x512 in another set just make sure the pairs are in slots 1+3 and 2+4......... and make sure they are absolutely the exact same type of ram..... some exceptions apply
