$8000 for a paint job! Not a hot deal.

Wow... I just looked that up on their website and it looks horribly tacky.

I looked it up, and boy are you right. It's nearly gold colored. Sooo tacky. The designo graphite is WAY better looking. And basically every one of the "basic" colors looks better than that god awful chablis color.

+1 to whoever said this might buy you 5 more years with her.

It's not that flashy dude.. I even tried to talk her into the SL500, which is something I can actually fit in and she was having no part of it... She drove a 98 regal GS for almost 8 years now so I'm afraid you got the wrong impression.. I basically forced her to find something because buick was in and out of shop all the time..all four windows acuators went caput over this last year @ $700 ea. The tranny lost 4th @ $1400.. The automated climate control cumputer went out.. $800.. And so on..

did you guys look at bmw? that light green color is sexy

Yup but her friend has the SLK so she had it drilled in her mind pretty good already by the time we went looking..

I'd take a Z4 3.0, or the new M-coupe over 5 SLKs.

Not me I'd buy another F350 but it's not my choice..😛

What size engine?

I prefer a carbon/ gun metal grey for a colour if I ever had a choice (meaning that if I ever buy a new car 😛).

Well, you can afford to spend $8k on paint, apparently, so just count yourself lucky that you're in the very small fraction of people who're well-off enough to spend $8k on a paint option on a brand new mercedez, and don't complain too much.

I spent less than $8k on my whole car, and I think it's a fairly nice car.

It sounds more like a backhanded brag than a complaint to me.

Unless I won the lottery and had 200 mil in the bank, I would never even begin to consider spending $8000 extra on top of the standard paint for special paint. Unless it can magically clean itself, camoflage like the predator, glow in the dark, and give me a hand job, all at the same time.

Have you really put two and two together and realized you spent a years world of college education, a whole other car, etc...to make your car shinier? That is the kind of thing that you think is cool for a day and then its just regular old paint after youre used to it.

Probably a little bit of both now that I think about it.. shouldnt toot own horn. Hey I just wanted to add we used to be extremely frugal people which is how we got to where we can afford a couple liabilities like cars..

yea but i believe it is safe to assume that this paint job is NOT a human paint job, and just robots doing it... thus cost is MUCH lower.

No, actually it's applied by ninja robots, which actually are much much more expensive. I completely agree with you it's too much to pay for robot work, but ninja robots? Totally a kickin bargain.

Hey, I'm not bitter because you spent more on a car than I make in a year, I'm bitter that you spent more on a car than I make in a year and you still have time to waste telling ATOT about it Don't you have a portfolio to watch or something? 😉

I find it hard to believe that anyone that has ever had a frugal bone in their body can even contemplate spending $8k on something like that.

I'm all for buying a mercedes and all...sure they are unreliable as all hell, but if you can afford to buy them, you can afford to fix them. I can understand dropping an extra 1k on leather seats if youre loaded, even $2k on nav or $400 on what is essentially a $20 satellite radio addon...but 8k for extra shinier paint is just downright retarded.

It seriously depends.

Say there's person A who makes $100k per year. It's a good income. Say he's comfortable spending an extra $300 for "metallic" paint for his car. Sounds very reasonable, and sounds like a decision he can make on a whim.

Now take for instance, a person B who makes $5 million per year. He's making 50x as much as person A. That means (ignoring the issue of tax and the changes in inelasticity with changes in income for the moment) he can spend $15,000 on paint with the same sort of personal inpact.

Dude you have to spend your money sometime or else what good is it? Just numbers in the account once you have everything you need. Oh and BD2003 you must only troll in ATOT, anyone in CPU or Vid forums will tell you I'm grandchampion bang for the buck guru, always have been. Hence the threads premise.

you don't think the cars listed in your profile are status symbols?

how much does that 66 shelby run for?

mercedes reliability is back up there i believe. the penny pinching has stopped, and they are back to over engineering. the old SLK yeah, nasty and probably not the most reliable, but the new SLK is a nice looking and very well built car.

Dude...that would be AWESOME paint :Q

I'd totally spring for that...

I've always thought the designo exterior and interiors were superfluous and extremely overpriced. If I was going to spend the extra 8k I'd get an AMG.

Of course....I'm not saying you shouldnt spend your money how you like, just that I *personally* find it absolutely ridiculous to spend that much money on the color and shininess of something. You could repaint your entire house for that much money.

Dunno why you call me a troll...I'm just calling it how I see it. The thread's premise seems absolutely absurd to me to be honest. Its as if you feel so bad about caving in to your woman that you have to at least try to redeem yourself by coming here and subconsciously brag, veiled in agitation.

If you really are the grandchampion bang of the buck guru, you effectively canceled out probably all of the money youve saved by shopping smart for the past couple of years in one shot.

But at least your car is shiny.

Yep........MB has really moved upward in longterm reliability......finished 11th from the bottom of the list in the latest J.D. Powers Long Term Reliability study. MB did beat out Kia, Jeep, Saab, Suzuki, Audi, Daewoo, Isuzu, VW, MINI, and Land Rover, but got beaten by everyone else......including every other American brand outside Jeep.

At least MB didn't finish dead last.................

It's just different people and different spending.

I save a lot of £££ but I wouldn't be too bothered with dropping £3.5k on an Eleiko OL set! Most people would NEVER dream of this but to me it is worth it. How can I do this? Because I save £££ on where it doesn't matter to me.

My car cost £600 and drives me to and from work and out and about. Cheap and cheerful. Yes the interior does suck and is just about 'okay'. No electric windows but hey it cost £600!

I would never in my right mind spend $8k for better paint! Oh f0ck no! But others might.

My dad just bought an E450 after owning a volvo since 91 that had become too expensive to repair. I warned him about Mercedes reliability, but he had to have the Benz...
