800 Dollar Computer

Ok my neighbor is looking for a new computer. THey are very computer illiterate....I was thinking about building them but for that cheap they would prob be better off with a pre made one...they arnt gamers or anything..they just web surf and such.

Sooo 800 bucks or less...

anyone know of a company I should go with or what I should build for them. What other companies are there other then Dell and HP, and Gateway..

thx

a) good call about not building them a computer. computer illiterate people will just bother you for tech support all the time, even if you build it for free.

b) given that they don't game a notebook might be best for them.

c) more than 1 year of tech support is probably a good idea for them. i don't know if you can get multiple years of tech support and a notebook, though.

d) emachines is turning out good stuff nowadays, but then they're gateway.

e) if there is a fry's near you you might want to point them toward the great quality (fry's house brand) computers. then they could get tech support at a counter instead of talking to some guy on the phone, which can be annoying for both the customer and the tech.

We dont have a fry's near here. We live in PA..i dont think there are any in this state or even close to it. I guess I could check out the local computer store around here thats a small deal.

if all they do is websurf and stuff like that, why do they need an $800 computer? and do they already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers?

thanks..i always liked abs..that system seems really nice and would be under 800 even with a upgrade of ram that it could use.

OK, two things. First of all, I know everyone hates Dell because they aren't very upgradable, but for the average net surfin, email readin guy who isn't hard core gamer, PC builder or upgrader, the Dells are always tops IMO cuz of their support. As far as the HPs, I have two, my current rig which is an older Pavilion 310 and a really old Vectra. The Pavilion I've had for 4 years and so far all I've had to do is replace the PSU. It has really served me well beyond my expectations. I swear by HPs and I swear by Dell support. Just my 2 cents but for the average Joe, they are both really good. LOL, hope I didn't start any fires.

Do NOT get a Dell. If you want to get a prebuilt, go with an HP/Compaq or eMachines. Otherwise build it yourself.

Dells are just overpriced and generally slow.

Ya but their service beats everybody. Lifetime. That's the only part I like. I even get service on the old GX1s and GX100s that I rebuild for ebay sales and all I gotta do is give them the tag number and I have instant phone/email support and they don't even care if I am the original owner or not. Instant service. Get that from HP or Gateway or Emachines. 😛 Not that I like talkin bad about HPs, they are tanks!! But their service sucks. Dell service rocks!! 😛

Not sure why you think Dell service "rocks," or that they hand out lifetime warranties. The stock Dell warranty is 90 days. You can pay extra for up to 3 years support, but it's by no means included automatically.

With HP/Compaq, a 1-year warranty is standard. They also offer "total protection" 3-year plans.

Not sure about eMachines.

I just put together a Dell for someone two days ago and it came with a 1-year warranty standard. I guess it beats this 90-day one you speak of.

Kinda silly that thread after thread people suggest Dells and you're (hurtstotalktoyou) leading the charge against Dell.

No one here is claiming they are the best computers in the world; there simply are instances (like this) where it makes sense to buy one. Sure, Dells are generally overpriced, but it's not too difficult to find a decent deal with the endless coupons and rebates they offer.

Tell them to go to their local WalMart and get a packaged HP system.. probably less than $800, easily.
If you build it, you WILL be bothered for tech support.. trust me.. 99% chance that will happen

then again, they will bother him for tech support anyway, as they asked him in the first place. probably a 98% chance that will happen. I recommended a Dell to a coworker of mine. Her husband calls me at least once a month. Usually software/malware related.

Dude Dell service sucks hardcore!!!! I still would recomend a Dell to the OP though, or better yet I would go with an ABS machine.
