Just looking for some more informed advice

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing......PC gaming ONLY. Currently playing the new Star Wars mmo.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread.....$800-900

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.....NewEgg and I'm in the US

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.......Intel for CPU and NVidia for the video card

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are......fresh build

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.....I sure have, but more information and advice from people who know WAY more than I do is always appreciated

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.....default speeds, but I MIGHT OC down the road

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.....1980x1020

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?......ordering end of this week, early following week

10. Don't ask for a build configuration critique or rating if you are thin skinned. .........thick skinned here! :D

Do you live near a Micro Center? Does the $800-900 budget include Windows, keyboard, mouse, monitor? If not, here's one possible configuration.

Core i5-2500K $220
cheap Z68 chipset motherboard $120
stock cooler $0
8GB DDR3 $35
GeForce GTX 560 Ti $220
DVD writer $20
1TB 7200RPM HDD $120
500W-650W decent quality PSU $60 (XFX Core or Antec Neo Eco or whatever is on sale)
budget but decent tower case $60
=$855

If you need Windows, downgrade the CPU to a Core i3 to pay for Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

6950 2GB for $250 AR > 560 Ti 1GB. Otherwise +1 on Zap's build.

Exactly - nothing.

It's not stated in the OP that folding is one of the PC's uses. Quite on the contrary, it's stated the PC is used only for gaming. It's completely irrelevant to this thread that 560 Ti is better at folding.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

One question....what is "folding" :)

I don't mind going a few bucks over $900, so Zap's build plus another $100 for the OS is ok.

Thanks again!!

acctingman - folding at home is a program ran by millions of people around the world. It allows your processor to be ran at 100% while the program is running in order to solve problems for science. It basically runs a trial and error for proteins to solve medical conditions like Alzheimers, diabetes etc.

If you wanna game, you can pause it, then when you go to sleep, start it up again.

In return you get "points" which are worthless, but still fun to look at lol. There are LOTS of people that run this application all around the world so there is a ranking system. More points the better, and you can compare your system vs other systems that are similar etc.

lehtv - he said it was gaming only, I would bet you a million dollars though that he will check his email, open up a web browser, use a chat program, have an anti virus, etc.

I would really look into the 6950 2GB, it is a decent amount faster than the GTX 560 Ti and having 2GB of RAM will allow you to run games with high details and AA for longer.

The OP said this:

True enough, but it doesn't hurt to suggest alternatives. In a lot of cases where people have brand preference, it's not something they've arrived at through rational analysis - often it's just an irrational bias. Maybe the OP does have a good reason to prefer NVIDIA, maybe not.

 We won't know unless we bring it up.

Hmm I must be the exception here. I develop bias's against companies based off of results and experiences from there products, over and over and over again.

Sounds pretty irrational. One person's experience with a product is about a hundred times too small a sample size to form any sort of statistically reliable conclusion about a brand or a company.

My choice of Nvidia over AMD

I currently have a Radeon HD 5770 and I'm having nothing but problems with the SW mmo I'm playing. I've downloded the latest drivers and it changes nothing. Since I need a new build I thought I'd go Nvidia....I've never had any issues with my old card, a 8800 GTS, so I thought I'd go Nvidia, but it's not etched in stone.

I just want a card that works with the game(s) I play :)

Thanks again folks!

I get crashed to the desktop
Game freezes....can alt tab, can alt tab del....ONLY thing that works is a cold reboot
Game freezes, goes black...goes to the loading screen and then comes back to the game...some times it comes back in layers (objects far away...then color....objects closer to my character then color)

So, more issues than I care to fix. Also, this PC is 5 years old with a couple UG's....it's time for a new build, period :p

That isn't necessarily a graphics problem.
