BURLINGTON, N.C -- An 80-year-old motorist who drove south for 14 miles in the northbound lanes of Interstate 85/40 said Wednesday she couldn't understand how she became so disoriented or why she kept driving the wrong way.

"I got on the wrong side and I kept going on. I don't know how I did that. I have no idea," Margaret Riley of Hillsborough said.

"I know I'm 80 years old, but I know I'm not crazy yet," she said. "I don't know why it happened."

Riley said she was on her way to a doctor's appointment Tuesday afternoon. She started driving the wrong way in Orange County and stayed in the interstate's northbound fast lane as other motorists tried to steer clear. More than 70 people called 911 operators in Alamance County.

Alamance County sheriff's deputies formed a rolling roadblock to pull the errant Ford Crown Victoria. She was stopped near Haw River without crashing thanks to deputies who arranged four patrol cars side by side with lights and sirens blaring to stop her, sheriff's department spokesman Randy Jones said.

"Fortunately she didn't hit anybody," Jones said, "but I don't know how because we got calls for about five or six solid minutes."

Deputies helped the driver turn around her car and get off the road. She was not charged.

SHE WASN'T CHARGED????????????????????

Video

No charge? So she keeps her license? Awesome. Can't wait until she plows into a crowded market.

I hope she gets hers revoked. California streets are too small, so how can you really screw up.

i really really hope they yanked her license. how can she drive the wrong way for 14 minutes! WTF!?

Ring....ring....
"Hello?"
"Honey, I know you're on your way to the doctor's, and I wanted to tell you there was a report on the radio just now that some driver is going the wrong way on I-85."
"It's worse than that, dear. They ALL are!"

Someone know another place I could look at the vid please? That site says I dont have the right plugin.

I've seen things like this 3 times on the roads to far (not highway though), all women, age 40 and up.

BTW, this happened outside of Burlington (my hometown). That particular stretch of I-40/I-85 is 4 lanes both ways with 65MPH speed limits

It's 14 miles not minutes.....

Which at a speed limit of 65MPH, and an old lady driving...is likely about 14 minutes of time if not more.

Can't charge the senile.

Fixed

I am all for mandatory yearly drivers licsence testing of the elderly.

exactly, it is a double standard.

look at it the other way, what would have happened to a 16 or 17 yr old with a drivers license if they drove the wrong way down an interstate, you think they would get their license back anytime soon? no way. it should be the exact same penalty for anyone driving 14 miles the wrong way down an interstate.

ok.

does that really change anything? not to mention depending on the speed it very well could have been more then 14 minutes.

she on incoming traffic and DID NOT STOP. she knew she was going the wrong way yet continued on.

yank her license before she kills someone.

I hope she was driving on the margin or shoulder at least.

She was driving in the fast lane

Yeah, that's really not safe.

and driving on the wrong side in teh slow lane is? =)

How about driving fast in the slow lane while going the wrong way? That would really confuse the hell out of the police officer. "Speeding , reckless driving, improper passing, failure to yield, ahhh screw it -- lets just give her a warning."
