BURLINGTON, N.C -- An 80-year-old motorist who drove south for 14 miles in the northbound lanes of Interstate 85/40 said Wednesday she couldn't understand how she became so disoriented or why she kept driving the wrong way.
"I got on the wrong side and I kept going on. I don't know how I did that. I have no idea," Margaret Riley of Hillsborough said.
"I know I'm 80 years old, but I know I'm not crazy yet," she said. "I don't know why it happened."
Riley said she was on her way to a doctor's appointment Tuesday afternoon. She started driving the wrong way in Orange County and stayed in the interstate's northbound fast lane as other motorists tried to steer clear. More than 70 people called 911 operators in Alamance County.
Alamance County sheriff's deputies formed a rolling roadblock to pull the errant Ford Crown Victoria. She was stopped near Haw River without crashing thanks to deputies who arranged four patrol cars side by side with lights and sirens blaring to stop her, sheriff's department spokesman Randy Jones said.
"Fortunately she didn't hit anybody," Jones said, "but I don't know how because we got calls for about five or six solid minutes."
Deputies helped the driver turn around her car and get off the road. She was not charged.
