Wtf? Does she do this all the time? Holy crap.

If she does do it regularly, though, she's made no more than what she would've had if she had just bought one ticket.

More tickets sold = more payout.

Another regular customer, Janice Broadnax, who bought a ticket when she stopped at the store Wednesday, said it was "an inspiration" to hear about Gutierrez's win. Broadnax said she won $100 once on a scratch-off ticket.

"I'm not as big a player as some though," she said. After hearing about the $400,000 win, she added: "Now, we know there are winners in this area. It keeps up hope.

That's just sad.

Imagine how much she must have spent if she spent $80 on the lottery every day though.

And pathetic. And a disturbing indication of the quality of education in this country.

Even more ironic - the money made from the lottery in many states goes to schools, and scholarships (hell - in FL - you can get a free path in college as long as you're a resident and not brain dead in school).

80 tickets a day
$1 a ticket
24 years

about $700,000, so she is only $300,000 or so in the hole now. I am going out to buy some lottery tickets right now.

The end of the article says she didn't play $80 a day, but you have to wonder how far in the hole she was from playing the lottery for 24 years.

sometimes people just don't care. i know that the odds of me winning are astronomical. but i still play powerball. i only play when the winnings are $100+ million and i only buy one ticket per drawing. that's less than $100 per year when you leave out the times that the jackpot isn't high. i think that i can afford that since i don't drink as much alcohol as i used to, don't smoke, don't do drugs. and that's a lot less than other people's vices.

I'll drop $20 on powerball tix when the jackpot's high (as if a normal, run-of-the-mill $10 million wouldn't get me anywhere) because it's just like any other form of entertainment to me. I treat the casinos here the same way - I'll go with $50 or $100 and expect to get a couple hours of play out of them... it's cheaper than going to see the Rams play...

See, that's not the kind of lottery play that's a problem. I worked at a convenience store for years, and I saw people coming in spending hundreds of dollars a week on the lottery, and I actually heard one person refer to it as an investment. :Q And they're not playing the big jackpots, they're playing the pick 3 and the pick 4 where the odds of winning are good so they get that occasional payout that keeps them going - but the more they play the more likely they are to be close to their statistically expected outcome, which is less than 50% of the amount of money they spent. It is a form of recreation, but for many people it's an addiction, and that's sad an unfortunate.

But my comment was referring specifically to the part of the article that tweakmm bolded - the idea that this person winning all that money somehow gives hope to everyone else in the area.

Say they spend $5 on lotto 200 days of the year. Thats $1000 a year. If they live in such poor conditions, those thousands of dollars could be used towards something better later down the road.

It's as simple as not buying that $5 latte from starbucks every morning. It's just too much money to be wasting when it could go towards something else.

even so, $20,000 isn't a lot of money, especially over 20 years. its not like thats going to buy them a new house or change the way they live.

Ah, why won't you just agree with me :) $20K isnt a lot of money, but I assume these people we're talking about make no more than $30K a year. $20K in savings is still something, enough to cover some emergencies that may arise.
