80 pin ide cable looks the same as 40pin ide cable?!

It's 80 wires, not 80 pins. Still has a 40 pin connector.

Correct. The wires are thinner - to my knowledge, the extra wires are ground wires, to provide extra noise reduction, to allow for higher speeds.

It IS 80 pins, 2 Connectors X 40 Pins per Connector = 80 Pins!

Duuuuhhhhh!!

😉

P-X

in that case shouldn't it be 120 pins as there are 3 connectors?? 😀

do new mobos come w/the 40 or 80 pin variety?

specifically, fry's combo specials. i got a k7vta3 from them. should it be a 80 pin cable?
(the mobo said it doesnt see 80 pin)

I'll give this a second try...

I've never heard of an IDE cable with 80-pin terminations. I think you're confusing it with 80-wire, 40-pin cables for ATA100/133 compatibility (they need the extra ground wires for less interference/crosstalk and higher speeds). (The wires are thinner on 80-wire cables than on 40-wire cables.)

Will a 40 pin ide cable be fast enough for a Combo Drive w/52x Burner? My DVD burner says to use an 80 pin cable to get maximum performance, but my combo drive doesn't specify.

Thanks!

You're also confusing them, syd. They're both 40 pins, but come in 40- and 80-wire versions. 40-wire cables are good till ATA/66, for ATA/100 or 133, you need 80 wires. Your optical should be fine with a 40-wire.

ok, 80 wire..

my cable looks like the grey one in the pic above.

do new mobos come w/80 or 40 wire cables? (ie: k7vta3)

Unless you buy from some scam vendor, all mobos should come w/ at least one 80-pin IDE cable and one floppy cable. KT266A mobo? WTF?

No, 80 pin IDE cables just have thinner "lanes".

Usualy new motherboards come with both,1x 80 wire & 1x 40 wire and 1 floppy wire.

See thinner wires on the grey one. That's an ata-100 compatible. Black one is only good for older drives or optical drives.

>> It's actually ATA/66 and above require the 80 conductor cables 😀

>> 40 cable is fine for CD burning and DVD reading up to a certain speed (1X is all you need for playback) 52x CD is something like 7,200 KB/sec. DVD Burning at 8X is somewhere around 22,000 KB/sec if I remember correctly (could be that 16X is 22,000 KB/sec) -- which is much faster than ATA/33 can support.

Hey skreet,

So do you think a 40 wire cable is too slow for a combo drive with 52x burner?

Thanks,

Sorry for the wire/pin confusion. I realize that both 40 wire and 80 wire cables have 40 pins; my bad.

Why do I have the feeling some people are just playing dumb because they're bored and lonely w/ nothing else to do?

Just look at them closely side by side, they do look different.

That's why SOME people have thousands and thousands of posts.

Don't worry about the specs of all these components, just buy all 80 wire cables from now on, usually the one with the blue connector at one end. They will cost you 5 cents more apiece, but they are BACKWORD compatable, so any drive will run in it's fasted mode as long as the controller supports it.
