Supposedly, I got a MSI Z68 matx mobo for pickup tomorrow...now all I need is a good deal on a case.

Total at NE:
135 mobo (AR)+ 315 processor + 45 tax = $495 out the door.

Total at microcenter
75 mobo (AR) + 280 processor+ tax = $406 out the door.

Ok, I not exactly sure what Mobo/CPU to buy. I am building out a new machine. I'm think I want an i5 with a sandy bridge. I hear i7 is not that much better than i5. I may snag it with this deal however. Now I need to know which mobo.
What is the best mobo/cpu for the price?
Thx

the 2600k isn't a huge step up from a 2500k, but with the $80 discount you might as well step up to the 2600k for $20.

Well it isn't as simple as $20, because a similar deal applies to the 2500K, except it is -$50 for the motherboard, vs -$80 with 2600K.

So for example, 2500K + P8Z68-V LX = $265

This is the same deal they ran last month, so they must be trimming inventory preparing for the 2700K and SB-E, or else they are really doing well using this as a loss-leader getting people in the store to buy other stuff. It sure worked on me, I went in for the 2600K + MB combo and walked out with a whole build.

going there tonight. which is the best price performance combo to get? my discount isn't showing up in the cart. but i'll be sure to bring in the ad and make sure they have whichever combo is in stock. i won't be using RAID and i don't think i'll be overclocking my i7 that much, but i want a decent quality mobo without any hassles.

I am extremely happy with my Intel i7 2600k + Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 combo

You have to get one of the K chips to get a combo deal.

The 2600K gets you $80 off certain Z68 boards.
The 2500K gets you $40-50 (I think) off similar Z68 boards.

You get more discount with the 2600K, so even though you get an overall cheaper deal with the 2500K.

I tried with both the 2500K and 2600K, only saw a discount with the 2600K...weird.

They say the 2500K is better for gamers though, correct?

It depends which motherboard you choose. Unless it changed since a couple of days ago, certain boards were not discounting. Ones that I know did work were full size ASUS P8Z68 boards, Gigabyte Z68 and ASRock Z68. The -M boards were not discounted. Did you add the 2500K first then add the board?

Ok, thanks...I was trying the Gigabyte UD4 and no discount on that. I was mostly just playing with the options as I'm still not fully committed to building a new system yet.

Well I must say my upgrade path ended up alot different than what I planned. I had initially budgeted $200 for a i3 2100 and a mobo. Ended up spending $333 after taxes foran i7 2600k and gigabyte Matx mobo GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 1155

No doubt, MC discounts on the K chips are targeting gamers.
I bit this deal (2500k+GB mobo, RAM, HDD etc) back in Sept and couldn't be happier.
MC is now my upgrade store now.
Gone is Fry's.

I bit on this also recently. Thanks! Gigabyte UD3H. Got a 37$ cooling fan for 11$ AMIR from a newegg shell shocker to go along with it! Thanks again OP and thread! The way I look at it, I have a dual core 2 now I've had for like 4-5 years. This sandy bridge, i7 system will still be the standard/be able to hang for probably 5 or so also. Not too much money if you spend a lot of time at your computer.

just found out that there are rev 1.0 and rev 1.3 of this GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard. what a pain in the ass. Looks like I have a 1.0 version but not really sure what the differences are.
