Can anybody give me a quick run down of a couple cd drives that will support the 80/700MB discs? Official support is better than 'will do it if you really try.'

I'm thinking the plextor 8x4x32 but haven't found any official word. I'm not interested in the 12x10x40 because for the extra $75+ I can get many more cd's than I've screwed up in the last 3 years with my POS, i.e burnproof is not important to me.

Anyone?
Thanks

well i am pretty sure just about all newer drives will support 80min. so far, ricoh's (2/2/6,6/4/24), panasonic's(8/4/24), LG's (4x4x24), plextor's(8/4/32,12/10/32), and Smart and Friendly (8/20) do. Those are all i have tried so far. I am pretty sure gamecopyworld.com has something on this subject. As long as you have a 80min cd and a reputable cd drive, i see no trouble at all.

There is some confusion between OverBurning, and 80min/700MB. CDRs.

80min/700MB is a function of the CDR itself (i.e. the plastic disk that you buy), any modern CD-Writer will burn the 700MB CDRs.

OverBurning is another issue:

Both types of CDRs (640MB & 700 MB) can be overburned with the right CD-Writer.

Since some CD-ROMs can not deal with OverBurning, and the saving factor is close to nothing, considering the current price of CDRs, it is useless.

I know my Iomega 12x4x32 with the new firmware can do 90 minute CDs..... and BTW Jack alot of CDs you buy are overburned... and without that capability on your CDR you cant back them up.

Thanks guys. Between gamecopyworld and Jack's link, I'm fairly convinced that the plextor I want can do a 80min cd, and other stuff too. It's just a little funny looking when some manufacturers list a 700MB cd and some list a 650 as the 'official' disc.

I've never ever seen or even heard of a recorder that cant handle 80 min CD's.

Even my old peice of junk Pioneer 2x burner(Highest end possible when it was new:)) can do that.
Or rather it could if I had it in a comp.

Well, don't know about anything... my current hp 7110 won't even try an 80 min disc :) That's because HP and SONY say that it's out of the red book "standard." I don't think the new HP's do either. I just didn't want to get into that situation again.

Yes I do know how large of POS's the HP's are, that's why this one is broken now.
