Just went to my local B&M Staples and pickup their brand of CDR. Its called Prime Peripherals. You pay $20 bux but it comes with a 10 bux rebate.

Here is the deal. I purchase 2 of them

$19.99 CDr
$19.99 CDr
$ 0.75 pencils
=================
$40.73Total
- $10.00 coupon from staples email
=================
$30.73
+ $ 2.54
=================
$33.27
- $20.00 Rebate
=================
$13.27 Final Cost
=================

That's only half the deal. I just made so burn with those CDrs and the best thing is that my Toshiba & Pioneer DVD players normally doesn't play CDr and only CDRW. Well, it plays those CDs. Now I don't have to pay extra for CDrw just to play on my Toshiba & Pioneer DVD Player.

The rebate said only one per a household. But it also said that you have to send the original UPC and COPIED of the receipt. Well Good Luck everyone.

Hi HKSturboKID,

Which model of Toshiba is your dvd player? I have a SD-3109 and it doesn't read any of the cdr's I've purchased. Hope this brand of cdr works on it.

Thanks,
Mark.

I've the Toshiba 6109. I've try fuji, tdk , sony, maxell, memorex CDRs and nothing works except for CDRWs. Until now, I just purchase the Prime Periperals brand from staples and it works. Good things do come cheap. In case anyone wants to know. The bottom is light blue.

I believe cyanine dye was the first dye used in cdr discs, thus sony, tdk, and other high quality brands use cyanine because it has a proven history.

since then phy dye has come out and many people are rooting it because of it's better compatibility, I believe it has a greater tolerance for a wide range of lasers, that's why it could be read in pesky cd players when cyanine discs cannot be read...(well it depends on how your cd laser is calibrated, it could be the other way around, but EVERY single cd laser I've seen could read phy dye, from 1x - 32x, while cyanine gives some players troubles).

This doesn't mean cyanine dye is crap. Cheap cdrs using cyanine are crap, yes. But I've had great experiences with expensive discs using cyanine (+verbatim+, fujifilm) and they operate flawlessly in any player I put them in, even my flawed, buggy, and dying CL 2x DVD drive :( . It's just that why buy expensive cyanine discs when phy dye could be had for a lot cheaper with the same level of or, sometimes, better compatibility.

Light green is the usual color for phy dye, and I hope CDR deal at Staples uses Phy dye! I might come over and pick some up if it is!

Should have gotten a Pioneer DVD player, they have dual lasers. Mine has read every CDR I've thrown at it. Also plays VCD's & SVCD's. Been making my own SVCD's using Nero on a varity of different media. Plays them all.

Thanks Fud,

It looks like I'll stick with the Frys Phthalocyanine type 8 dye for $7.50 / 50.

I used Prime Peripherals, but I guess they weren't really high quality or something cause my cd's got messed up soon after I burned them... but that sounds like a good deal nonetheless.

It's amazing how some Cd players will play cdrw's but not cdr's. I mean cdrw's are a lot harder to read than cdr's. Companies even called the ability to read cdrw as a feature, calling it Multiread. Having this "feature" just means the cd player has a powerful laser able to discern the weak pits on the cdrw and has good error correction to fill in the blanks when that pit cannot be read. So I wonder why the harder-to-read CDRW's can be read in some players while the regular easier-to-read cyanine cdr cannot be read.

Thanks HKSturboKID, I think I will give it a shot tomorrow. Hope it works so I can actually burn my own vcd's.

Does anyone here have the same player: Toshiba SD-3109? Please let me know if you do and know of any cdr's that work on it.

Thanks,
Mark.

I do have a Toshiba 3109 player and yes, it does read these CDs. However, I notice that the there's some little statics with audio CDs. Haven't tried VCD yet.

has anyone actually got the rebate from prime?
i remember buying from them a year ago.
there was even a $12 rebate, but guess what, it never came.
there is no way to reach the company either.
probably just a scam in my opinion.

That's why its safer to use the 10 off 40 coupon. I rather paid 30 instead of spotting out 40 just in case the rebate fails. I just burned a couple of VCDs and tested on my Toshiba and it works AoK.

Just an FYI...in my experience, these Prime Peripheral CDRs have been *awful*...we bought about 200 of them for a project, and literally made 80 coasters. And this was on a pair of HP drives that have had no problems before or since. I'm sorry I don't work at the location anymore, or I'd give you more specs, but, I just wanted to let you all know...
