80 gig western digital harddrive... any good???

I am thinking about getting another harddrive for my computer and I found the wd 80 gig 7200 rpm one for $200 canadian (like $150 or so in american) so I think I might buy it, does anyone know anything about this drive? is it good? currently I have a seagate 80 gig drive, and I really like it. Oh and merry christmas to everyone.

I have a 40gb Western Digital 7200rpm and I like it. It may be a bit loud (it's not REALLY loud...but it's not as quiet as the IBM Deskstars). I like my drive alot...haven't run into any problems and have had this 40 gigger drive for exactly a year. 🙂

I assume the 80gb would be very similar and very good.

WOuld I be able to hear the sounds though? cause with my seagate barracuda IV, I can't even hear the sounds from the harddrive, oh and if I get the drive, should I run raid with the two drives or not bother? Does raid really give that big of a performance boost?

I've heard that Raid0 with IDE isn't really worth it. But i don't know, you should search on that topic. I doubt you'd be able to hear it though. I'm not able to hear my 40 gig WD because it's mounted in a 5.25" slot, and it sits further back from the front of the case.

I Can't hear a sound out of my 600BB 60 GIG WD. Of course i have 4 case fans and a delta screamer blowing in there so it kinda drowns out some things. I can still hear my 13.5 GIG IBM Deathstar though so the WD is much quieter than anything i have used before.

It will likely be louder than your Barracuda since those tend to be very quiet, but the Western Digital drives don't seem to be overly loud to me, and i've had a few of them.

I'll be honest. Mine aren't loud either hehe. However if you read articles from TomsHardware and other hardware review sites, they all say the drive is loud. To tell you the truth, I rarely hear mine while casually working or gaming. Unless I stick my head near my case, I won't even notice my hard drive clicking away.
