80 gig Maxtor vs 80 gig Western Digital??

HI All

I'm planning on building a p4 2.8 800fsb based computer. If u guys had a choice between
a 80gig Maxtor with a 8 meg cache or a 80 gig Western digital with 8 meg cache(WD800JbRTL) which would u choose?

Also, for anyone who used both of these which one put out the least noise?? Which one do u think would be the most reliable?

I find wd to be a lot quieter but slower
thats an 80gb 8mb wd vs 120gb 8mb maxtor, so should be close

Well, I find the Maxtor almost silent, and by the reviews and my own benchmarks faster (don't own an 80 gig WD, just a 160 gig WD, same noise level)

Edit: And reliablilty, probably the same, but I have heard several 80 meg WD's dying, could be since they were so popular. Maxtor has fluid bearings, and I like them better in general. Personal preference. No big difference. Go for the best deal unless you feel compelled one way or the other.

WD should be a little faster, the Maxtor should be a little quieter. Reliability should be about the same. Depends on what you value as most important.

I have Maxtors here running since 1995!:Q I'd go with quiet over a bit of performance anyday! As I type here right now, I hear the quiet hum of psu and the occasionaly rapping sound of the hdd. Very unnerving. ::Shivvers::

I think the performance will be quite similar between the two but the Maxtor should be quieter since it has FDB's.

For low noise and historically high reliability (and 3 year warranty) Seagate is the way to go. It may lose a few points in the performance bench, but it's nothing you're likely to notice.

If a few points of bragging rights is too much to give up for virtual-silence from your HD and it still comes down between the WD and the Maxtor, choose the one with the better warranty.

I have lots of Maxtors at home and at work which have worked flawlessly with no problems. The only drive model that I really had trouble with was the D740X which I had to RMA twice but the newer DiamondMax 9 series drives are wonderfuly quiet and fast.

Anyone who says there's any significant difference in speed/noise/reliability between Maxtor and WD is full of sh*t, to be blunt. Buy whichever one is cheapest and has the warranty you want.

Yup. 12 Maxtors, not a problem... 2 WD1200JBs - both crapped out after short time

Other way around for me, I guess it's just the luck of the draw.

heh.. i think the general consensus is, go with your past experiences. as you have none, pick based on price/warranty i'd say. personally i don't think the differences in noise/performance are enough to say one is always better than the other. if the prices are the same, then maybe pick your preference of quieter or faster.

people have had bad experiences with both WD and Maxtor, it really is luck of the draw. i'm not sure about the maxtor warranty policy, but i know WD still has 3 year warranties on the JB series.

hm i heard that.. but i bought a WD JB in december, said 3yr warranty on it. maybe i got the end of it? i thought it was still in effect for the JB series, but not the rest. my bad

The JB designation means it has an 8 MB cache, and thus the 3 year warranty.

Here is most everything you should need to know comparing the two drives. Looks like the Maxtor is faster in most desktop situations, though not by a large margin, and it's quieter but warmer. According to the actual reviews (click on the column headings to access the reviews) it looks like the Maxtor only comes with a 1 year warranty, compared to a 3 year for the WD. As for reliability, StorageReview.com lists the Maxtor at only 19 percentile vs. 87 percentile for the WD drive. (The percentile score means the WD drive, for example, is more reliable than 87% of the drives StorageReview has indexed, much better than the Maxtor drive.)

WD retail drives now carry a 1yr warranty, but there is a coupon inside that offers 3yr for an additional $14.95. FYI, WD OEM versions still carry the 3yr warranty. See their website for warranty info.
