80 gb drive became a 33 gb drive -- how do I change it back?

I've got a maxtor 80gb drive that I'd been using as a backup but now that I'm running a 160gb maxtor along with my ibm 45 gig, I thought I'd plug this 80 gigger into my ReplayTV.

Problem is, I used the wrong disk image on it and so it wouldn't work properly on my ReplayTV so I thought I'd start over, but when I hooked it back up to my PC it shows up as a 33 gig drive and I've tried formatting, partitioning, un-partitioning, using Norton Disk Doctor, using Maxtor's Maxblast software and no matter what I do, it still shows up as a 33 gig drive.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

fat32 or NTFS ?

file system jacked? try a boto disk and f-disk it?

have a friend or buddy with Partition Magic? The floppy disc version would work.

if you have ghost (norton), i have an image that would overwrite it and can prolly salvage your drive.

if ya need more help .. try and contact me via the board and send me an AIM or MSN screen.

well, norton couldn't find any dos partitions on it and I removed all the partitions earlier so it's neither fat32 nor NTFS. I was able to partition it as NTFS but the problem is that it only shows up as 33 gb.

also, apparently b/c norton can't find a dos partition, it won't even show up as a drive in norton. maybe I should partition it as NTFS and then norton can fix it?

Maybe I'll try fdisk, although I am a bit worried about recognizing the right drive (I've forgotten how fdisk works and have three drives on here currently).

Thanks for the advice... keep the tips coming and I'll update just as soon as I get a chance to tinker with it...

won't argue with you there. when i was trying to get an old drive to read and tried fdisk and pm and other stuff, i pulled out my other drives to make sure i didn't accidently format something. i even did the drive shuffle when i went to format my new 120 drive. can't be too safe with your data.

well... win2k sees it and I can even partition it as NTFS, the problem is that for some reason it seems as if 48 gigs of the drive have suddenly disappeared because I can't get them to show up no matter what I try

I'm going to try fdisk later

Anyone know how I can do a low level format with win2k?

Do a low-level format after booting in dos with your other drives disconnected. There should be a low level format routine on the MaxBlast disk. If not there is one on Maxtor's site.

Not to be condenscending you guys though, great job on trying to help. 😀

The reason why it's limited to 33 gigs is probably because of either a limitation on your controller (highly unlikley) or a jumper setting called "Limit capacity"

Check the jumper settings on the drive to make sure that limit capacity isn't checked. If it isn't checked, make sure you have the latest BIOS for your mobo. If that doesn't work..

Do a low level reformat with Maxblast.

There's no chance that I've permanently changed the capacity is there? Say by somehow frying one of the platters or something like that?

I haven't had a chance to try the formatting yet, hopefully tonight.

If anyone has any less time-consuming ideas before then... please post em.

Nope, if you fried the platter the drive's firmware would still detect it as 80 gigs. maybe you've got a ghost partition on there, or something.

Anyways, check your jumpers and make sure you aren't doing some limit capacity thing.

And if that doesn't work, use maxblast to low level reformat.

Yeah... that site is how I got myself into this mess. Although, it's not their fault, it's mine. Apparently I used the wrong disk image the first time I used the software and somehow that caused this whole 33gb problem.

you're sure its not a jumper? my seagate has that, documented on the disk. my maxtors don't, although i'll bet they've got one too.

hmmm.... I guess I should double check that before I fdisk it. I did change the jumper settings but I though I was just changing them from cable select to master... however, it would save time if that was the problem.

Trust me man, just check the jumpers. That sounds alot like limit capacity. Limit capacity limits the drive to 32GB. Which is pretty much what you've got now. Atleast give my advice a go! 😀

Good guess. But the jumper limits the drive to 32gig not 33gig according to the data sheet.

dont forget, that could be it, since theres always a lot of rounding going on when a hd size is displayed (not to mention 1,000,000 bytes versus 1024x1024)

Well guys, thanks for all the great advice.

Turns out I had the jumpers set up wrong. 😱

Set them back to master and suddenly it's an 81 gig drive again.

Ran the update and plugged it into my Showstopper.

83 hours available for recording.

😀

All is right in the world.

Hehe. I claim credit for being the first one ti discover the problem, but give credit to you all for trying to help out. 😀

Everyone's so friendl at AT. 😀
