In my last post, i would like to thank ppl recommending an XcLio. Actually, im stripping to full naked, my final budget for PSU is $ 70-85.

What i need is a nice looking PSU most of all stable rails with no drops due to stress. Wiring sockets at the back of PSU and a little mod style stuff.

The Seasonic 380 sells for $ 75, ive seen more PSU's also rated superb giving more Amperes.

So for a max 80-85 to spend, which PSU is best.

Follow the system specs from my last threads.

That Antec does not have those socket type things at theback, i need those to prevent useless wiring spoiling my modded thermaltake case.

With an A64 and a single ATI card, you won't need anything supercalifragalisticexpealidocious (sp?) like you would with a Pentium 4 and/or one or two nVidia cards.

I've got some more PSU's from the reviews I've done (and haven't done) that I'm going to be selling in FS/T when I get home from work tonight. If you want first dibs, drop me a PM before I head home. Otherwise, if you wait, one person will come along and buy all of my power supplies in one shot (that's what happened last time.) ;)

Ultra X-Connect, can be had for around your budget, has solid rails (I don't care what ANYONE here says) and has the best modular setup I've seen. the layout of the plugs is great, and the cables are hands down 10x sexier then any other's I've seen. Been running this PSU for 4 months 24/7, and haven't had a single issue.

great looking PSU
plenty of power, no, not the most but more then enough.
stable.
get the Ultra man you'll love it :)

Am I "dying" because I'm not a fanboy who buys into hype, or because I recommended a great PSU, that you happen to dislike?

Maybe I should go spend 2x as much on a Enermax so I can be l33t like j00r 4r3??!

I've owned all these so called "uber PSU's" there isn't a difference in real world sh!t. He wanted a PSU that works, and has modular cables, you can't show me a better one then Ultra PERIOD...

since I'm supposed to die, I won't be able to respond to anything you say, have a wonderful life.

The Ultra is generic quality PSU with a fancy paint job and modular cables, it?s crap. Just because you?ve been running yours for 4 months without problems doesn?t prove much, a 500 watt generic for $20 would likely do just as well but then again it might not. Either way your experience from using one X-Connect doesn?t qualify you to make informed judgments on it?s quality or stability.

The X-Connect has been tested several times; it?s not stable, and it can?t supply it?s full rated power safely, how is this a good PSU?

Operandi,

(Here we go again...)

A $20 power supply CERTAINLY isn't going to do as well as any Ultra. Your exaggerations aren't appreciated. Like I'm going to use a Deer to power a Prescott w/ a 6800?

The Ultra HAS been tested several times. It IS stable and it CAN supply it's fully rated power. I don't think you can back ANY of your claims. Give me links.

There were only two instances of Ultra's "blowing up" in reviews and neither review stated any technical reason behind the unit's failure. No measured load, etc. Bsides, as everyone knows, ANY piece of computer equipment is going to have some percentage of failures, so regardless of how or why those two failed, it's certainly a small percentage in the grand scheme of things.

What color is the sky in your neck of the woods again?

Ok. Since you're only using an Athlon XP with a Radeon 9500 so even a half-way decent 300W power supply is overkill for you, I decided I'd just do all of the work for you and load test an Ultra X-Connect JUST FOR YOU.

I set my load tester to 28A on the 12V, 18A on the 5V and 10A on the 3.3V. -5 and -12 are set at 0.5A and the +5VSB is set to 2A. My math shows that coming out to about 477.5W.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/01.jpg

I then took a brand new 500W out of the box....

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/02.jpg

And hooked it up.....

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/03.jpg

And fired up the load tester. Because the 12V and 5V were a little high, the actual load turned out to be 480.3.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/04.jpg

As you can see, the 12V is at 12.06, the 5V is at 5.08 and the 3.3V is at 3.23. All well within spec.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/05.jpg

I then kicked my 12V up to 32A.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/06.jpg

This made for a total wattage of 522.8W.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/07.jpg

Note the clock on the laptop. 2:30. I'll be back after 3:00 with an update and one last photo.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/08.jpg

And for the record, Operandi... although your system may or may not work fine with a $20 generic power supply, I respect your choice. It is, after all, your choice. And I'm sure you're aware that your power supply would not hold this load for this period of time. How much did that thing cost you?

No. Neopower is a rock solid power supply and $81 is a steal. Remember what I told you about looking out for rebates? ;)

The ONLY thing I didn't like about the Antec was the half ass effort at making the cables look good. But if aesthetics isn't your forte, then don't worry about it. POWER is what powers your computer, not looks. ;)

I sharpened the last two photos in Adobe and they doubled in size! WTF. :p

Anyway....

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/09.jpg

3:03PM. The 12V dropped a little, but are still within spec and who's going to put a continuous > 500W load on their PC for over half an hour? 11.88V, 5.06V, 3.22V.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/images/10.jpg

Total watts is 521.8W. I lost one watt. ;)

Hey jonny, how much does that equipment cost. Im sure a simple ammeter and known load values can be used for bechmarks but still how much for that device new??

Oh about the cables, they really are as* cables, ill have to spend more on sleevings but hell no, ill do my $ 1 cheap mod with yellow taping and extremely cheap chinese insulation. :D

I didn't buy it new. ;)

But I think about 3 or 4K can get you one.

You're funny. :D "A simple ammeter" isn't going to put a 30A load on a 12V rail. All an ammeter can do is tell you how much amperage the power supply is producing. It can actually produce the load. :p

Thank you Jonny for finally standing up to all these fanboys that put down the ultra psu. Ive got a 500watt modular one that has ran a p4 2.6 overclocked with a 6800gt overclocked perfectly stable and now a amd64 3000+ overclcoked with a x800xl overclocked, all stable.
