hmmm... for IDE drives, Western Digital and IBM are top dawgs, whilst the likes of Maxtor and others are cross your fingers type drives.
Seagate makes good scsi drives btw.

TranceNation -

Interesting comment, but my experience tells me to switch Western Digital and Maxtor on your list. Every Western Digital drive I've had (3) have gone belly-up. Every Maxtor drive I've ever bought (7) is still running.

My experience with hard drives.

Seagate - good for a year or so, then develop bad sectors.

IBM - Good, and quiet, but overpriced.

Western Digutal - Good, but have seen controllers go bad or bad sectors after about 18 months.

Maxtor - Most heavily used that I buy and very reliable, and cheapest to buy too.

I have 4 Maxtors:

Replaced the Seagate in my Dishplayer to a 40GB Maxtor
Have an 30GB/7200/ATA66 main drive - 80GB/5400/ATA100 secondary/storage drive in my main pc.
And a 30GB/7200/ATA100 in my wifes pc
And a WD 30.2GB/5400/ATA66 sitting on my shelf as a spare.
It will probably sit there, unless I decide to add it to my wifes pc.

1. WesternDigital is fine for me (read: your mileage may vary), I use their HDs.
2. This company looks reliable, but if I want a HD, I want it now, not next month.
3. For anyone upgrading their computer like me (i.e. gradually) I suggest to wait on the HD issue. They'll be falling in price soon, instead scoop up some RAM while it's dirt cheap.

I think i need to defend WD as well, I have gotten 3 WD and 2 maxtors, both Maxtors died, one i got a replacement and one I couldnt. The 3 WD are still running great, and it has been over 4 years on 2 of them and they are great.
