I think the drive was discussed in another thread. People believe the 80GB WD is a new 20GB/Platter drive that WD themselves haven't put on website. Most sites list it as a pre-order. They probably are getting worried in the mainstream market and wanted to keep pace with Maxtor on size. Personal opinion, if you can't afford 75GXP 75GB (and most here cannot) , then this may be the drive for you.

EDIT: After seeing the site, I would be cautious with this either being a misprint or a pre-order. If it's a pre-order, they could change the price once the drive is finally available and simply not allow orders til then. If you really want it, you just have to try it and hope.

Haha, good luck buying from a company who couldn't even afford a decent domain name! WTF is "BuyMoreProduct.com"?!

I just called BuyMoreProduct and spoke with a CSR.

She said "These are actually on back order". I told her that's not surprising, as WD hasn't even announced the drive yet. She said thay have no "expected ship date" yet.

So, order away, but you might not be seeing this drive for a while. Then again, you could get lucky and get in in 2 weeks.
Who knows? It's certainly a great price.

Cheers,
-Dave

That is a totally unbelievable price. I really hope this is 7200rpm because the only 80gb drives available currently, to my knowledge are 5400rpm. There are a couple 75gb however.

I wouldn't buy a hard drive for a while, if you can wait, fortunately I have 130GB+, so I am good for a while. IBM just developed and will begin production of 30GB platters....WD and Maxtor are to follow Q1\2002 with 40GB platters....prices will be falling shortly. I see 200+ GB hard drives by mid 2002. These should also be cheaper as mass production gets underway. Just as the 5400RPM got closes out, we will see the 7200, 20GB platters fall.

No way is it going to be a 7200 rpm 80 gb drive. The largest 7200 rpm drive thay make is 40 gb. And their largest drive period, is 60 gb which is the 5400 rpm. Personally, I would never get anything WD again, its junk and the customer service, well its an oxymoron. Send a drive in, your cc gets charged and it'll take 3 weeks to get a new one. Remember, they recalled 400,000 drives recently.

I never had any problems w/ WD drives. Have the 2x 40Gig HD's the 20Gig platter ones in raid no problems.

I guess it's a matter of experience.

Zwingle,

WD came out with 30GB platters, and those drives are available already. The other companies are following with 40GB platters at a later date.

Isn't this the same drive that isn't in production yet? I ordered one the last time and found out that the wholesale supplier sends out pricing to the retailers on this drive and WD doesn't even make one this large yet.
