An eight-year-old boy who weighs over 14 stone (89kg) may be taken into care by a local authority.

His mother, Nicola McKeown, has been called to a child protection conference with the local authority on Tuesday.

Family support may be offered, but the last resort would be for North Tyneside officials to place Connor into care.

Connor's pre-Christmas weight of 15 stones and eight pounds (98.8kg) [220 pounds] is four times the weight of a healthy child of his age.

"I thought it would be the opposite if I'd neglected Connor. He'd be skinny and underfed and under-nourished."

"He refuses to eat fruit, vegetables and salads - he has processed foods. When Connor won't eat anything else, I've got to give him the foods he likes. I can't starve him. "

You'd think that at 8 years old, it would be possible for his mother to have some control over what he eats.

What I want to know is who informed the authorities.

That kid will gladly eat fruits and veggies if there is nothing else in front of him, I guarantee it. Parents don't know how to be parents.

Indeed, this goes with Darwinism.

Also, what?s with the tripe about processed foods? Surely it?s the amount consumed that is the primary issue.

The number of calories consumed is only one determinant of obesity. What foods are eaten have an effect on how they are metabolized, and some people are more genetic disposed to obesity.

Nobody gets that fat overnight. This kid's had a serious problem for a long time, and it's obvious he needs medical and psychological help. Without it, this kid's headed for a very early grave, and his mother isn't getting the job done.

Whether the legal system should be involved is another question.

 Sad, really, that what used to be obvious is now considered insightful. I remember as a kid that when in the woods camping I'd gladly wolf down food (veggie stew, for example) which I'd flat-out refuse at home, because when you're in the middle of nowhere starving, there aren't lots of options. Parents need to stop trying to be a 'friend' to their children and try to be a 'parent' instead.

QFT.

It's prolly irrelevant, but I wonder what his parents look like?

there is a video clip of his mom and she is also obese and that is prob one main reason it's nature and nurture.
