Boy, 8, dies after accidental shooting at gun club
Police say wound was self-inflicted
By Matthew P. Collette

An 8-year-old boy died yesterday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after he accidentally shot himself in the head at a Westfield gun club, Westfield Police reported.

Police said the child's death, caused by a fully automatic Uzi machine gun, appears to have been an accident, but it remains under investigation.

The Westfield Police Department released a statement about what they described as a self-inflicted, accidental shooting, which occurred at 2 p.m. at the Westfield Sportsman's Club on Furrowtown Road.

In a telephone interview last night, Westfield Police Officer Carl Girard confirmed the boy died of his injuries at the hospital. Police did not release the child's name nor did they say where he was from. The Springfield Republican reported that the child was not from Westfield.

"Witnesses state that he was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury," the police statement read.

When emergency crews arrived, the boy was conscious but in serious condition with a gunshot wound on the right side of his head.

Police said the boy's father, who was at the event, accompanied him to the hospital.

The Westfield Sportsman's Club was hosting its annual "Great New England Pumpkin Shoot" during the weekend, police said. Officials from the club could not be reached.

Information on the club's website explained participants did not need a permit or license and would be accompanied on the range by a certified instructor.

The event was organized by C.O.P. Firearms & Training, an Amherst company which, according to its website, organizes machine gun shoots throughout New England. Officials from that group also could not be reached.

What kind of stupid fucking git hands an Uzi to an 8-year old child. Sweet Jesus on a pogo stick!

If you'd like to teach your kids about firearms, get them a pellet gun or a .22. Many adults wouldn't be able to handle an Uzi, much less a small kid.

Freaking people.

In related news, the NRA heralded this story as a triumph of second amendment rights for all Americans.

Meanwhile, how many kids died in car accidents, or from wrong prescriptions?

Lets ban cars and medication.

I thought about posting this and making a snide comment but figured it was in poor taste. Kudos!

As for the story, I find it immensely irresponsible to hand a gun like that to a child. Some people aren't too bright and it's a shame to put a kid in that situation.

Let's not regurgitate the pro-gun/anti-gun bullshit again.

I'm perfectly fine with people shooting up pumpkins with an Uzi, but I find this particular incident really fucking despicable. This is like the antithesis of good judgement and responsible gun use.

Local hearsay is that the "safety trainer" was standing right beside the kid when this happened. Anyone with 3 connected brain cells should have not let the kid pull the trigger.

A very sad event. It' unfortunate that this poor boy's death will likely result in the breakup of the entire family. The mother will almost certainly blame the father (rightfully so IMO) and will split from him. The father himself will probably endure a deep bout of depression that may ultimately be his demise also.

Best wishes for the family as they deal with their pain.

Why was an 8 year old shooting a gun, anyway? Seems like a range should be reserved for only those of legal adult age.

It was a family "let's shock-n'-awe some pumpkins because it's October" event.

Edit:

See, Real America? We have Real Americans who like to blow shit up in Mass. too! We call them Massholes. Socialist elitist commie welfare state my ass.

Yea, but when I do it it's funny. There's a subtle difference.
