Terrorism is, in the broadest sense, the use of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a means to create terror among masses of people.

We in the USA define it as any act of violence, including but not limited to, waving a water pistol, committed by a brown person

However there is an exception clause in the law where a white person can be charged as well, as long as he meets the Mozlem definition

I dislike common usage when talking about the criminally insane.

Huh? I was asking you a question based on your own definition. Comprehension issues in elementary school?
Great, another passive aggressive rightwing pussy troll. As Incorrigible would say, "to the list!"

I am asking as a regular poster to attempt to keep this thread as civil as possible.

This kind of horror is something we don't see often here in Canada.

Our hearts are heavy and filled with sorrow.

Police have confirmed that the suspect did not have a weapon when arrested. Explains why the arresting officer was acting the way he did.

My sympathies. Looks like the general lack of meaning in the modern western life, the emptiness of the whole culture and its inevitable outcomes - is starting to spread to Canada too

Life is not "safe". It has *never* been "safe".
Life is pretty safe where I live.

17 Million people. 150k deaths per year.
Most of those 150k people died of illness or just old age.
7700 people died because other reasons.
1300 of those died because of traffic accidents.
3900 died because of a fall (that number surprises me!)
1900 cases of suicide
86 drowned
187 accidental poisoning
95 murders and man-slaughters

There you have it: 95 people out of 17 million killed per year.
Life is pretty safe, if you ask me. As long as you look left and right when you cross the street. And don't fall off the stairs.

PS. Numbers are from 2016
PPS. We don't really have guns in my country. But that's pure coincidence.

There seems to be a possible link to Elliot Roger and being rebuffed by Women as a possible motive. That's what was found on fb anyway. It is not known if that's legit at this time though.

Yes but Terrorism (proper noun) has a legal definition, because like "race crime," it entails specific criminal charges and sentences that exist at a level different from "simple murder" or other crimes. Ergo, it must meet this specific definition to qualify for the proper charges, and inform the courts regarding the following case.

As for this case, it looks like he was a known mentally disturbed individual. Think about an elderly person that plows into a crowd of people, unintentionally. You could argue that this kind of confusion leading to tragedy is no different than a mentally ill person involved in the same sort of tragedy, with the same result, because the mental faculties of both have no real intent to create those deaths.

Looking at what has been reported I'd say he is depressed, hates the world/mankind, and wanted to commit suicide this way.
He was telling the officers to kill him during the standoff.

Holly shit in america this guy would of had 100 bullets in him

What's amazing is that it looks like one police officer held the guy off and took him into custody without killing him. Looks like the recet training with law enforcement training about de escalation in toronto worked

He was close enough to see what was or wasn't in his hands. If you look at the second video I posted he walks at the cop and the cop just finally walks at him and that's it. The guy just throws his phone down and it's over.

It'll be interesting if it turns out the killer was one of those "involuntary celibates" you see on Reddit. It'd be the ultimate example of toxic male culture: a sense of entitlement to sex that's so strong that a murderous rampage is more acceptable than developing into a better person.

For political reasons.
It also says for money or social change. Using the legal definition, it also says it can't be used regarding acts of war or self defense etc. Nowhere does it say it can't be used for batshit crazy.

Actually yes it does. This is the legal definition.

18 USC 2331

(5)  the term “domestic terrorism” means activities that--

(A)  involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;

(B)  appear to be intended--

(i)  to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;

(ii)  to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion;  or

(iii)  to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping;  and

(C)  occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

The Canadian criminal code reads the same. There has to be a specific intent to be considered as terrorism.
