From the news coverage there are several dead. At least 3 tarp covered bodies from what I can see. Possibly 4.

I won’t jump to conclusions on motivation. It can happen anywhere. Toronto is a city of millions of people. Reporting is the man was in a brief armed standoff with police but surrendered without any further incident. From the video it was like he was taunting the lone office to suicide him. Raising and lowering his arm pointing at the officer.

Looks like a shaved headed white male to me.

armed standoff?
One officer in the street. Suspect standing beside the van arms raised like he was holding a gun. He had something in his hand but not clear what it actually was. Kept whipping them down and back up to a shooting stance. Like he was wanting the cop to shoot him Cop didn’t shoot. He finally gave up.

Trying to find the video online to post up.

From that small video it totally looks like a gun. I'm sure being there would be easier to see what it actually was. But he was asking to be shot and should have been. IMO :) Mostly cause he already killed people and acting as if he had a gun pointing it at a cap.
You shoot him you get no information. I’m glad the officer had the restraint to take him alive.

And I’m betting it was a cell phone which might be why the officer had such restraint.

According to CNN it's 9 dead and 16 injured. Just awful. "...a trail of destruction stretching up to a mile." Glad they got the guy.

They have had quite a bit of training since Sami Yatim's death.

Man that guy would have had 30 bullets in him if he did that after jaywalking in the US.

As to the OP, that is horrible. I hope the injured recover and they find out this nutters motive, RIP to the dead.

The suspect is a 25-year-old from Richmond Hill, so that's within the area. He's of Armenian roots and is (or rather, was) a student.

And yes, it's hard not to wonder how differently American police would have handled the incident. Canadian police generally deal with a lot less violent crime in general, and there's a sense they really do treat gun use as a last resort, like it should be.

Alek Minassian is reportedly the suspect. Police knew him. They are leaning towards mental health and not terrorism.

I'm sure police in the good ole US of A would have handled this the exact same way.
