Which dual hard drives of the same size should I get for my new NAS ? One will be for backup.

Whichever one you can afford, and whichever you feel offers best value for the money.

The only real advice I'd have is don't get SMR drives.

Go for the 8TB WD EasyStore from Best Buy. Here's my thread in the Deals forum. They're WD Reds inside, and usually $180 and easily shuckable. I'm using two in my HTPC and might add a third if the price hits $160 again.

Just to piggy back on this, some of these will need to be used with a molex to sata adapter depending on which drive is inside; presence of the 3.3v rail puts of them into a sort of standby state. Not a big deal though, still worth picking up.

Is this an issue with any of the popular consumer NAS units? Like a QNAP 431?

There was another thread here where it was stated that this was a enterprise focused feature of the new SATA specification, enabling a drive to be power cycled in place remotely.
Any enclosure that supplies 3.3v via the SATA connector will essentially perpetually signal it to be in the power off state.

EDIT: More info starting with post 13:

I've got two HGST 10TB He10 drives and two HGST 8TB NAS drives. Will be adding more of the former drives as I'm able. ($$)

FYI BestBuy has 8TB EasyStore for $130. At that price get that unless you really really need more than 8TB per drive..

Are you referring to this?

Says it's a "Black Friday Ad Deal" and that it's sold out. What the heck does that mean anyway? Does it just not go on sale until Black Thanksgiving Evening, or did they actually have it for sale already because the ad came out? That's not how Black Friday works, Best Buy.

Deal already dead. I ordered two, we'll see if they ship. It was probably a BF deal that went live too early.
