8 miles in one hour

I'm not in terrible shape, but not in running shape by any means. How long would it take me to train to this level? I'm definitely a distance runner (rather than a sprinter), as I used to jog 5 - 7 miles a day. However, the fastest I ever did 7 miles was 1 1/2 hours, and I'm not sure how long it would take to train myself to get up to 8 miles in one hour.

Thoughts?

UPDATE: So here is my current physical shape. I'm 6'9" tall, around 290lbs. I bike or walk the mile to and from work every day (little work, but it keeps the heart beating). I go to the gym for about an hour every other week. I just get on the eliptical for about 45 minutes and the stairmaster for another 15. When it was warm outside, I was riding my bike every Saturday and Sunday. I usually rode for about 2 - 3 1/2 hours on Saturday, and another 1 1/2 - 2 hours on Sunday. Both were at very good paces, as I was pushing myself the entire way.

Conclusion: I'm in decent shape, but not running shape yet. I could easily lose 20 pounds by the end of February, and 270 on my frame isn't much. However, that would only give me two months to train hard, as the bet is that I couldn't run 8 miles in one hour by April 29th.

Yeah, but that's one. Try doing eight 4-minute miles in a row. Can't be done (by me, anyway).

8 miles in an hour is cake. Shouldn't take long at all to train to this level if you are an athlete.

ok. let's do the math here:

1 1/2 hours = 90minutes...right?
7 miles in that time = 12.8minutes per mile?

WOW! No offense meant, though. I ran cross country in HS (3.1miles) and was averaging 7.5minutes a mile and I was on the slow end. If you're really a runner like you say a 12.8minutes mile then is pitiful.

8 minute miles is infinitely more manageable than 7 if you're planning on running 8 miles. for alot of people, this is a common threshold

I'm in shape, so very easy for me. I run 7-9 miles consistently at 6:30-6:40 pace. If I was racing, even faster than that.

7 minute miles arent very difficult if your a decent runner. I ran 7:19 pace for a Marathon (26.2 miles)

8 Miles in 1 hour is 7:30 pace, not hard at all for someone who only trained a few months.

Oh yeah, I was going slow. But I was doing it solely to lose weight, and I was fine with running slower and doing longer distances. Also, I might be wrong about taking 90 minutes. I didn't time myself, but that's what I thought it was taking me... roughly. Like I said, I was just trying to keep my heart rate up as long as possible.

As for my physical shape, I ride my bike everywhere I go, and walk or ride my bike the miles to and from work every day. Nothing major, obviously. But when it was warm outside, I was cycling for over 3 hours on Saturdays, and at a good pace.

I'm also a little overweight, but I've lost around 20 pounds in the last three months, with NO extra excercise over what I said above. If I actually went to the gym, I could lose most of my extra weight (the lightest I could get to is about 230 as I'm 6'9").

EDIT: Oh, and I'm at 290 now.

Also, the reason is that a friend bet me I couldn't do this by April 1. I have a gym at work that I am a member of, and I go about once every other week, so for $150, I could definitely motivate myself to go every weekday.

Cool. Care to post a link to race results showing that. Faster than 6:30 miles for 9 miles while racing? You'd be in the top 5 of any amateur half-marathon race in the country if not #1.

Not... every... day. That's a weekend thing.

Also, I just got the date extended to April 29th. Think I could do it?

P.S. Have you seen my avatar? Wanna guess why I chose that one?

I used to be able to run 6 miles easily in 45 minutes. But I wasn't training extremely tough. 8 in an hour shouldn't be horrible.

Be prepared for some nice shin splints.

6:30 pace for 9 miles is decent but its no where close to top ranking speed. I'm not slighting Kauru, I'm just saying that you apparently have no idea just how fast good runners are.

For reference, a decent amateur runner will do a marathon in 3 hours. Thats 180 minutes for ~26 miles. Which is less than a 7 min mile pace.
