Man you guys just made me think of the Cadieux Cafe an old Belgian restaurant. East sider here or is it now East Point?

Oh and you might want to stay away from the old Top Hat & White Castles on Gratiot & 8 mile. It was gangland but I havent been in the city for a couple of years.

If you ever visit Detroit, take woodward ave south into Detroit for sake of example compare the buildings you see from 9 mile road to 8 mile road, then from 8 mile road to 7 mile road while you drive on woodward. You'll see the difference.

Thanks. I'd like to visit Detroit, because I enjoy photography in inudstrial settings.
I'll be sure to check out what you said.

Detroit is the urbex mecca of the world.

You kind have to know the history to really "get" alot of these buildings, and the city itself but I think it's safe to say that it's a very interesting, sad, and yet somehow beautiful part of the city.

*note: if you decide to urbex something, don't blame me if you hurt yourself or get busted. abandoned buildings are dangerous, kids*

edit: bah, I guess the link is too long. google image search for the heidelberg project.

It does suck that a lot of these buildings will be knocked down...

It makes me wish I had a lot of $$$$$ to buy some of them and turn them back into something amazing... some of those buildings were probably absolutely stunning when they were built.

Grand Rapids is another story though.... any large buildings we have are being renovated and turned into offices or condos & apartments... downtown has changed quite a bit in the last few years. We have quite a few large factories from furniture making (used to be furniture capital of the world) and they are all being renovated... Quite a few large buildings are either being built or in talks.

It?s such a damn shame to see the City still in shambles. Who knows maybe someday it will get re discovered like you say Grand Rapids is doing.

I hope, there are a lot of beautiful buildings on that forgottenmichigan.com website... quite a few of them would be awesome condo/apartment buildings, and some hotels... I didn't see the area that they are in, so it's hard to tell if it's worth restoring. (safety concerns)

Schoenherr can ONLY be properly pronounced by a native of the Detroit metro

The Michigan left turn is simple. If you want to turn left, go a 1/4 of a
mile past your turn, get to the left, then make a left, then make another left,
then make a right when you get back to the intersection where you wanted to turn
left in the first place. NOW you have gone left.

Michigan has four seasons: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Construction. 😉

We're right between still winter and construction right now which means it is still snowing and all the roads are down to one lane. 🙁

Oh and..

I drive down the lodge every day. 50% of the homes have broken windows, walls half *missing* and many roofs are caved in. I just pray to god I never run out of gas or break down on the lodge.

edit - and for reference. these "homes" are what gets burned down on devils night, girls raped in, and the home base of drug dealer operations. both sides of the lodge fwy look like something out of mad max.

Bah. Come down to Detroit and try saying that.

I lived in Michigan for seven years. Two and a half years of that was in Rochester.

Detroit is one of the ugliest and culturally void places I have ever had the displeasure of visiting.

Obviously you've never heard of Dearborn....or how about the fact that over 400 languages are spoken in the tri county area....or Hamtramck....or how about you work downtown, then tell me it's culturally void. Yea Detroit aint pretty but you dont have to spread crap around making people think even worse of us, that is the kind of attitude that keeps Detroit firmly entrenched in bad places in people's mind. Thats the kind of attitude that has created such a rift between the burbs and city. Yea Detroit aint the beauty queen of towns but downtown is still a good maybe even great place to be, it's so much better than it was even 5-10 years ago. If you dont like it buzz off we dont need your bad attitude around our town, at least there are some of us who would rather attempt to further and better the city than slander against all the progress that has been made.

if you really want tragedy, you'd be awfully surprised how many of those buildings WERE in pretty good shape before mike Ilitch got ahold of them and left them open to rot.

the guy owns a positively jaw-droping number of abandoned builtings and parking lots that used to be abandoned buildings before he got the city to tear them down for him.

people blame kwame for how the city looks, but IMO ilitch is the big crook.

Wheeeee, more construction for you!

I have always appreciated Detroit, despite living in the suburbs since I was 4 (ghetto and Oak Park before that)...that said, its rate of improvement is pathetic and all this crap that's been happening recently doesn't help with the general opinion of D-town.

One day I will move away...and I doubt I'll be back visiting Detroit.

I would tend to think he stayed indoors for those 7 years if he does not find the tri-county area to be culturally rich. We have culture coming out of our ears. That is not always such a good thing but....

Detroit's population is heterogeneous. Its people speak a multitude of languages, and there exists diversity in the customs, mannerisms, and beliefs of its citizens. However, the word "culture" is ambiguous. By culture, I meant "Intellectual and artistic activity and the works produced by it" (Dictionary.com's definition) or "A particular form or type of intellectual development." (From the OED)

My admittedly subjective view is that:
1. The creative works that have emerged from the Detroit area are not of high quality.
and
2. The Detroit area is not known as a forum for intelligent discourse.

I am sorry for the confusion.

It's the same way when you drive south on jefferson/ lakeshore ave. You go through grosse pointe with all these $500,000, $1,000,000+ houses. You cross this one road and go into detroit, all the houses and business arre pos.
