8 mb cache buffer on a hard drive

Is there much of a speed difference between a 2mb cache buffer maxtor 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive and a 8 mb cache buffer maxtor 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive

You only see the speed difference on very hardware intensive tasks.

Yes, there is a difference. I only notice the speed when I am unraring to a 700 mb file or converting movies.

I notice teh diffreence for the larger files too. They really are kick ass drives.

I noticed a speed difference quite a bit during boot-up and also during game loads (lots of texture packs). I can also see a difference when I'm ripping/encoding/decoding or recording with my PVR, although not as noticeable as my new RAID 0 array.

Check out www.digit-life.com ....they put out reviews on new and obscure equipment faster than any site I know of.

Big difference with big files or defragging. Bootup is also better.

technically its only worthwhile, if the files are under 8mb. because, the 8mb is like a queue. if the file is over 8mb , then only the first 8mb of whatever isbeing moved will run faster than the data transfer rate of the drive.



8mb will help a little bit in seeks also since well, more stuff COULD be in the 8mb than a 2mb. since 8mb buffer drives are more expensive than 2mb ones by $25 or so, it probably really isnt worth it THAT much, especially on drives with a fast seek time.

frankly i don't notice it. maybe got a bad one or something. good performance, but it doesn't seem like it is any better than my previous two drives.

I also only notice boost when dealing with large files....As someone else stated because the prices are not much higher you may as well go for the 8mb drives.

I never even noticed the difference going from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm drive.
I believe it's all marketing.

damn - i'm spoiled by 15k drives. at work we have NAS backup servers with 8mb ide drives, not fast but it does it's job.
