Nikon stated that Battery grip along with igh capacity battery is needed as it requires more voltage. However, a Korean user have found out that it's possbile to do a 8fps on d300 without the help from the battery grip.
It's simple or complex as pushing down one more button while pressing the shutter button. Using this method, he's shot more than a few thousands pictures yet there haven't been a problem.
Though he hasn't given out specific details, other users on the site discovered the secrect and nobody has yet to report the malfunction of the camera or the images.

He posted the videoclip of his D300 doing 8fps and a person who is respected in that area confirmed it personally. They notified Nikon Korea, Nikon Korea contacted Nikon, and the reponse should be out in public soon.
I bet there'll be a firmware fix for this leak.

I wouldn't recommend it. First, you're likely to stress the batteries, and Lithium {anything} batteries tend to not take the stress well (i.e., battery damage or Flames).

Second, power is like a teeter-totter ... if there's not enough voltage, the current tends to spike and things start working in unusual fashions.

If you can spring for a US$1700.00 body, then save a bit longer and get the battery grip to properly support the operation at high-speed.

It sounds like some kind of diagnostic mode? Perhaps it would be safe to use if you're running the camera off the AC/DC power adapter.

Anyway, as ScottMac mentioned, I wouldn't want to potentially screw around with my Nikon battery.

Even with two Nikon EN-EL3e batteries (one in the camera, one in the battery grip), Nikon still felt that 8xAA was a better option to provide 8FPS. You would think that if disabling 8FPS was entirely a business decision, they would have enabled it with a second EN-EL3e battery so they could sell more of those instead of having people buy cheap rechargeable AA NiMHs instead.

8FPS? Bah, I would try to overclock this thing to at least 12FPS and cool it with solution. I wonder if there's a voltmod that I can do with a conducting pen. If my first D3 doesn't overclock that high I'll just return it and try to get a better sample.

Try coolbits or rivatuner.
