We just bought a 5-bedroom house where all of the windows need to be replaced. We're getting a few quotes, and the first one's in already at $8,500 firm for 330 square feet of windows, including about $1,300 PER WINDOW for the largest windows! I need you guys to put your brilliant minds together and come up with a way for me to save some benjamins :) We're gonna renovate the house and resell it in a few years, so i don't care if the windows don't come with lifetime warranty, or if the white will turn to yellow in 10 years. I just need some average windows with the little handles you can turn to open em up. What particular type should i look for?

Yeah, I though that was the price for the OS.

For those windows, is it just getting replaced or the price for getting blinds/curtains?

Yeah that might be a chunk, but its 18,500 (Canadian) for each window in my house. Some special type of glass that my dad purchased.

I thought it was going to be like windows 2003 enterprise or something... it's probably up there anyway. No idea on windows... evadman used to work at a HomeSupply store... might be able to give you a guestimate if you PM him.

The windows are getting replaced because they're at least 40 years old. The entire house is being renovated inside and out. Every wall and celling repainted, basement drywalled, exterior stuccoed, area around the house landscaped, driveway interlocked, etc.

What the HELL? We replaced 8 windows with vinyl double-pane low-e ones... Only $6000CDN total. Quality is top-notch too.

Gotta love those ultra energy-efficient windows. They pay themselves off in just under 300 years! :D By the way, since you're probably in Toronto, see if your dad needs stucco done for his house. We'll do it for only 40k!

Look for some cheapy window inserts. I get one phone call per week from people selling windows, so it shouldn't be hard to get estimates. I got no less than 11 estimates for some HVAC work here. Prices varied a LOT. Hey, I think there are some you can buy and install yourself pretty easily. Just the inserts, not the whole frame. I'll edit this post if I remember who sold 'em...

It sounds like you got your estimates from some company that specializes in window replacements. They probably try to talk "up" their product on how it has vinyl this and vinyl that. However, like the others have suggested, I'd look for more estimates.

For example:

1) Locate a local contractor who does home renovation work.

2) Ensure the contractor can use "off the shelf" windows - provided they will fit your openings.

From what I recall, Andersen wood double-hung windows at Home Depot run $250 - $300 depending on size. I can't imagine the labor charges as being more than $300 per window. Plus, then you have to figure in replacement moldings (on the inside of your house) - about $10.00 for materials. Top it off with paint (inside and outside) - $40.00 a window. That puts me at about $650.00 a window - or much less than the $1,300 you were quoted.

If you lived close to me, I'd be glad to give you a very competitive estimate. :)

You don't have to replace any big bay windows or something else similarly large or oddly shaped, do you? That can jack the cost up considerably.

Just remember this, if you plan to sell your household there's a good chance you'll get a higher appraisal if you use higher quality products.

My father asked the guy who made us the windows what he preferred, and he said he only had aluminum in his house. We got vinyl anyway, because it was cheaper. :)

You know you're a nerd when you automatically think that the word Windows used in this thread was a reference to Microsoft's Windows.
