8.1 Surrond for PC

That's a pretty big question with no information on your needs...

7.1 is pretty much the limit for most if not all media types and systems.

Are you looking for an all in one system in the Logitech vein? Or are you looking for something for home theater with a receiver and separately purchased speakers?

What are you going to be using the system for?

How about a HDMI soundcard? I have a Asus Xonar HDAV Slim, of course the max is 7.1, but it works and works well. Can output lossless, etc. But a ATI 5xxx series videocard should suit your purposes too. Unaware of a 8.1 soundcard as of yet.

I prefer the former.

Games.

~Why not get an amp that goes up to 11 instead of just adding one more speaker?

Isn't it just more speakers, not more accurate directions? And don't they cost $3,000+? 🙂

oh man, popcorn factor is strong with this thread. /pulls up a chair

Get yourself a 5.1 system and be done with it. Or headphones.

7.1 isn't any better than 5.1. How could one more channel make any difference.

Unless they're going to make a massive jump, I see no reason to change.

Let me know when 10.1 becomes the norm.

Does anyone even offer DVD/BD with such Encoded?

No, some BDs are 7.1, but the overwhelming majority of material is 5.1. There isn't even a audio format that supports higher than 7.1. The 9.1 and up systems use PLIIz to matrix in the extra speakers from the existing feed. I'd say stick with 5.1 or 7.1 but keep in mind that for the same money you can buy a better 5.1 setup than a 7.1 setup. Speaker quality will make a much bigger difference than speaker quantity.

Since 9.1 adds 2 high front speakers to a 7.1 setup, 8.1 would likely add 1 high front speaker located in the center. That's how it works with 6.1 using 1 rear surround speaker in place of 2 rear surround speakers for 7.1.

Ahh, didn't even consider Rear Centre either. Too many possibilities.

I have the solution to this problem:

10.1 receiver with 200W x 10 driven by ICEPower 😀

It's only 71lbs too (as opposed to those terribly heavy 90-100+ lb class a/b receivers)
