7v trick for fans

if i use the 7v trick on a sunon 120mm fan, can i screw up my PSU? iver heard that by sending voltage up the 5v line, u can screw up the PSU.

That is true. When I did that on one of my fans my PSU started whining! :(

Because of that I either use 12v or 5v now.

Before I started using the 7v trick I had read that it can cause problems.
I have been running a couple of Panaflo L1A's 7v on a 4 year old Enhance 300W with no side effects for about 6 months now.

Probably has more effect on some of the cheapo power supplies.

As I understand it, if there were no other load on your 5V line you could seriously mess up your PSU. Fortunately in a normal rig there are plenty of other devices that place some draw on that rail so the risk is substanially less.

I think if your worried about the risk you should just buy some quiet panaflow fan that wont need that switch.

done the 5v trick on 3 80mm's in 2 diff systems (6 fans total) and haven't had any probs. but most of my stuff doesnt run that hot anyway, any high end stuff i wouldnt do this on
