I have a comp in my bedroom for internet and music. Everything is passively cooled except the PSU which has a Panaflo L1a. Here are the important heat-producing specs:

P2-450 on Abit BH6 w/massive CPU HS
Voodoo3 3000
Single platter Seagate 5400 rpm FDB HD

That's about the gist of it. It's in a midtower case and cables are folded neatly. Temps aren't really a problem ATM, but the L1a seems loud (on par with others, but loud in comparison to everything else not making a sound. :) Anyone else put their PSU fan on 7v when it's the only thing circulating air? Ambient temps range from 65-80F or so.

How quiet is it?

PSU modding is prolly the diciest of all mods.

Anything smell hot?

I guess since you're just using it for music then it won't be drawing too much amperage.

I'm no expert. Let's hear what others think.

Im assuming you put that L1A into your PSU. Since you have already been inside your PSU and havent been killed, I assume you know what you are doing :D

If it were me, I would go ahead, put that on 7V or even 5V, but perhaps put another panaflo L1A as intake somewhere in the front of the case that can get fresh air - on 5V or 7V.

IMO it's not quiet enough. It's slightly quieter than my tbred system which has a single L1a on the cpu and a 120mm Fortron PSU (quieter than an L1a).

Modding the PSU isn't the scary part, it's deciding if things will be cool enough. :)

If you were in the modding spirit, putting a 5V Panaflo L1A on the front of the psu (behind the 5.25" bay drives) as intake and 5V Panaflo L1A as exhaust on teh psu should be plenty of cooling for the psu.

I run my L1A at 7V in my Antec 380W PSU. Running strong for a year now. The air is a bit warm, but everything works like a charm :D

Ahh, much better. :) I tried using the original power wire connecting to the PSU and grounding to the 5v line, but it didn't work. After using a +12v line on a molex connector, all was well and quiet.

u should be fine, i modded my enermax 360watt PSU too

i jinxed the crap and noisy 80MM exhaust fan, changed the 90MM intake into a quieter one and it runs like a charm now.

powered my old rig with XP2000, 15K SCSI HD, ATI AIW9700 Pro like a charm
