I took had to take a sequence of math classes for my major (elementary education) and in the first and third we had to figure out how things like these worked (just in case some kids ever approached us with one). I'll be damned if I could remember how to do it, though.

This one is easy, I did 123, so 321 - 123 = 198. If you picked 1, 9-8 =1. If you picked 9 1+8=9 and finally if you picked 8, 1-9 =-8 which they take the absolute value of.
