Thoughts?

Kit lenses: 18-135 IS STM and 15-85 IS STM (This would be a new lens)
CF, UDMA mode 7 + SD, UHS-I
No GPS or WiFi
Fixed LCD, with no touch function.
20.2MP “Fine Detail” CMOS Sensor (I want more information on this)
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual DIGIC 6 Processors
65 AF points “All Cross-type”. Dual cross on the center point.
10fps
ISO 100-12800, ISO Boost mode 25600 and 51200
1080p/720p both get 60fps
Servo AF for video shooting.
Anti-flicker mode, eliminates flickers under flickering lights (e.g. fluorescent lamps).
Spot metering size 1.8%
Built-in flash with radio trigger function.
Mic and headphones connectors
Can sync time between 7D II cameras.
Lens electronic MF
About 100% coverage OVF

Then this clarification post came out

We’re not 100% sure about GPS, we think the camera may actually have it.
We mentioned radio triggering with the popup flash, but that may have been a mistake.
“Fine Detail CMOS Sensor” is standard Canon language for Canon sensors.
The camera has iTR (metering sensor-assisted servo tracking) just like the EOS-1D X
The camera should be compatible with f/8 lenses at the center, and maybe more points.

All they needed to do was stick a Sony sensor in a 7D body and call it a day.

And the camera will be like everyone else except for a slightly better AF & menu.

IMHO, Canon has to come up with something new like when they come out with the 5D, and 5D mkII. Perhaps hybrid multilayer sensor.

It is hard to believe that Canon going to give the 7D II 65 cross type AF because arguably it will have better AF system than the 1D X that have 21 cross type. Hence the cheaper body may take business away from the expensive flagship camera.

I'm going to be less diplomatic than iGas and simply call B.S. on the specs laid out in OP. No way does it have 65 x-type AF points, and that means the rest of the alleged specs are suspect as well.

Rumor has it that the announcements should be in September. Rumors suggest an update to the SX50 and T5i on top of the 7D... Rumor.

Was going to get me a Rebel, but now I have to wait. With all the clearance sales over the summer on the Rebel line, some of those rumors may have some truth to them.

They're pushing out another rebel??

Rumor is an update to the SL1 and T5i, so SL2 and T6i.

Both the SL1 and T5i appear to have been announced in early/mid 2013. If they announce in Fall 2014, that's about a year and a half -- 12 to 18 months.

Hopefully that means I can get a T5i for less. The T3i is from 2011, IIRC, and still pretty popular.

Isn't T2i thru T5i based on the 7D sensor? If so nothing really worth upgrading. I remember how back in the day each Rebel got sensor upgrades, but at a certain point it's a bit overkill now.

how would the 6D sensor compare to this new one? I have a 60D right now, and I was looking to move on to a full frame.

if canon hasn't come up with some amazing breakthrough in sensor tech or started purchasing from sony, it'll probably be similar to the 70D's sensor in terms of noise performance.

T2i/T3i/SL1 has 9 points AF w/ only center-AF cross type
T4i/T5i/60D has 9 points AF w/ all cross type

C'mon 99 point AF!!! :D

ugh. I'm specifically looking to upgrade from the T2i because of how awful noise performance is. I can barely shoot at ISO400 I get so much noise. Yet they have nothing better from their crop bodies right now. If this 7Dii doesn't actually have something new as far as the sensor goes I may have to bite the bullet and go FF.

The newest rumors say the 7Dii doesn't have a Foveon-like sensor. At best, it'll be the same sensor as the 70D which is basically the same as the sensor in your T2i. Canon's APS-C sensors haven't really changed for almost a decade, though the processing has improved so each year it gets a smidgen better. Canon APS-C is still competitive at high ISO (3200+), but other sensors have gotten significantly better at lower ISOs (greater dynamic range, color information).

Not sure if they are cross type equivalent or what but the sony a6000 and a5100 have 179 autofocus points:

http://www.japantoday.com/category/new-products/view/mirrorless-camera-with-179-point-af-sensor

This is what happens with mirrorless and the freedom to have PDAF points all over the sensor at a lot less cost than a separate AF sensor. :) In decent light or better, the a6000 and a5100 apparently focus about as well as a midrange DSLR like the D7100, according to multiple sources like Cameralabs, The Camera Store, etc.

You can see the dancing PDAF points in Wide/AF-C mode for instance:

Even the CDAF Lock On Tracking works ok:

Rumor is the publication ban ends on September 5.

Think I'm going to pick up a T5i body and leave it unopened until mid-September.
