Full Details

So does this mean no 60D until spring? I need the 60D to come out so that I can get a used 50D for cheap! Although I get the feeling a few 50D owners will be selling to upgrade.

Finally, after two years, Canon responds to Nikon's D300...but the 18 MPX sensor still has me concerned as far as noise goes. And the new AF is still not as "pro" as D300's.

Look at the images on imaging-resource's preview of the 7D. I would say ISO performance is slightly better than the 50D. IMO they did a good job with their new sensor tech overall.

and canon didn't throw in a freebie dual memory slot, I would love to have that. But otherwise, looks good, 1699 body. I am tempted. I'm going to have to wait to see some 3200/6400 shots, where I'm most interested to see how this performs.

I'd rather have it there than not. I'm not gonna complain about throwing in an extra ISO step that could be used in "emergency situations" where getting the shot is more important than PQ.

This ain't your xxD's AF or "responded to D300". with a processor dedicated for AF this thing is basically a D3 made by canon for about half what it cost originally.

With the 7D eating into the 1D market, I won't be surprised a new 1D will come out soon.

maybe canon will finally get serious with the aps-specific lenses. and it'd be nice if they were regular EF mount rather than rubber donut EF-S lenses so that i could have the option of using them on 35mm eventually.

looking at exif on imaging-resource, the 7D shows 72 dpi for iso 100 nr off, while the d300 shows 300 dpi for iso 100. is that a print setting? 7D is also set to 1/3 stop greater exposure on that comparison.

wish i had some decent paper around at the office. guess i'll have to print some crop samples when i get home.

1D is on a 3 year product cycle, so next spring. also expected is a cut down 7D to appear as the 60D.

still waiting on that rebel T1. that's gotta be around store shelves for xmas.

the D300/s still has a whole lot of points to use. It might be clustered around the same area, but they are there.

But again, speculation is useless, I'm waiting for reviews before I hit buy.

looks like a solid competitor to the D300(s). since those two cameras were just released, they'll be sitting on the market together for a while. should make the next generation a great one.

If I were a 5D2 owner, I'd probably be a little red in the face right now. Canon basically put every single feature 5D owners were asking for into a camera $1000 less expensive:

Highly improved AF (with dedicated AF processor)
100% viewfinder
1080p24 video
Improved construction/sealing
Dual DIGIC processors for faster FPS
Transmissive LCD in the OVF (for focus points, grid)
Electronic level
Built-in wireless flash controller
More hard switches for common functions
Shorter mirror blackout/shutter lag

People waited 3 years for the 5D2 to come out, and now Canon themselves confirm it was a half-assed release.

Key feature right here:

Built-in wireless flash controller

ABOUT DAMN TIME. Screw you canon and your 200$ ST-E2 transmitter.

As a 5D2 owner, I'm glad 7d came out with such specs. I don't know if it's just me but I wouldn't buy crop bodies even if it has ultimate features. In other words, I'd even chose original 5d over 7d just because 5D is FF. Anyway, I'm glad 7d came out because 7d shows how Canon has changed their direction. Looking at 7D, I'm more confident that Canon will release FF version of 5D2 and that's a good sign. However, it would've been damn nice if 5D2 came out with specs. of 7D but I didn't expect that as FF market just isn't mature as APS-C one.

I would think those who bought the 5D2 did so because they wanted FF. I can't see someone, who doesn't care about FF, select the 5D2 over even the 50D.

edit:

IMO the 7D looks to be a 1D for an APS-C line. The "Professional Crop" if you will.

5D2 left some nice things that would've been cool but in terms of IQ, the 7D isn't all THAT impressive. Better than the 50D, but it's a tossup with the 40D. So we're not talking about IQ that blows anyone away. 5D2 can easily beat the 7D and I've seen some upsampled 5D1 stuff and it's a total beast. The 7D can't touch FF stuff still.

This could be an excellent backup for a FF user though.

Suppose Canon makes FF version of this sensor, it'd be a massive 46MP monster. Now, I can't wait to see in-depth review of 7D.

That would probably annoy the low noise crew and the processing power in the camera, 4-5 DIGIC chips? :p lol

Exactly. Canon will release an 8D or something: 7D + FF.

But actually, what I would really love to see is the 7D with like a 12 MPX FF sensor costing around $1999.

crop sensor versus FF.... I suppose if you are a stickler for IQ then I don't see how you could be upset with a 5D2. Same thing with the 85mm f/1.8 for $300 versus the $1600 f/1.2 version. For some the extra $1300 is worth it. But hey if it brings down the prices on the 5D2... I am all for it.

I think a key thing that the 7D has over the 5D2 is the flash controller but the 8fps shooting is KEY. If you're shooting sports or wildlife, the 7D has a HUGE advantage over the 5D2. 5D2 can still be your landscape or wedding photo camera but the 7D will pretty cool.

I would. Mostly because FF cost is still way out there for me. I've grown to really like my crop setup.. 17-50/50-135/30/85. I would have to spend a bit of money to match that in FF. The 7D gives me everything but FF, and I'm actually fairly happy with that. Tho, I am missing a ~24L equiv.. but I doubt I'd ever get that in FF, too much, heh.

But to each his own. I'm sure I'll switch to FF when it gets more affordable (aka when they get to ~1yr updates and I can pick up a not so used one =). I guess I should thank Sony for the A850, heh.
