Can you crossfire the two of them together? I have looked around and not heard anyone say. 7970ghz edition has the boost and regular 7970 does not.

Flash the regulair card with the GHZ ed bios and problem solved. Just make the normal GHZ ed card the main one.

crossfire has always allowed you to mix and match cards so I assume you are good to go.

If I remember correctly as long as they are the same generation of card you can do this. The 7970 GHZ is kind of a strange instance, it could be considered a new generation of card, but their naming scheme is REALLY lacking in this case. If they would have named it a 7980 or something a lot of confusion could have been avoided.

I figure that it will work, just wonder if the boost will be disabled on the GHZ ed card.

My understanding of crossfire is that if the cards are able to be CF'd the GPU clock will be the lower of the 2.

Yes. You can also get a classic 7970, flash the BIOS to a GE, and then crossfire it.

Well, you can save some $$$ that way.

The clocks may be different, but they only run as fast as the slowest GPU, and only utilize the amount of RAM from the smallest GPU.
Not necessarily: you can run asynchronous clocks and you'll see a performance boost over running both at the lower clock.

It doesnt have to be same gen, 5770 + 5750 + 6770 + 6750 would work in a quadfire setup. Itd be strange though.........
