7970 with Antec HCG 520W? Sufficient?

Hey all,

There are some really good prices on the 7970's right now and I'm wondering if a non-modular Antec HCG 520W would be enough? It looks like a 670 or 7950 would do quite fine with this PSU, but obviously the 7970 is a bit more demanding. Normally I would just look at 7950, but NCIX as well as some other sites are offering the 7970's at ~340. Thoughts?

Welcome to the forums. I think HCG-520 is enough, it's a quality unit and has the necessary connectors. What's the rest of your setup?

In Anandtech's review, you can see that a 7970 system with an i7-3960X @ 4.3GHz doesn't consume more than 391W in heavy gaming, and that's AC watts, not DC watts.

Thanks for the welcome. :)

I forgot all about the rest of the system! It is a mATX board with a 2500k and 8 gigs of RAM. I have two hard drives going and 5 fans including the CPU fan I believe. I'm running a 6870 at the moment.

Is the 2500K overclocked? Just to be safe, don't go for a crazy near-5GHz OC at 1.4V or something like that. Keep it at reasonable clocks and volts and the PSU will handle a 7970 fine.
