As the title says, I have a Ref. 7970 that I am looking to put in my loop. I have no clue who makes a good GPU block. Can someone who has experience with this weigh in on my decision please. Thanks in advance.

I personally prefer EK water blocks, and they do have a few reference design 7970 full blocks for sale. Just go to www.coolingconfigurator.com and put in you graphics card and they'll show you a full list.

I also found this that might be helpful, it's a review of 6 different blocks for the 7970. According to the user, the best ones were those by Koolance, Watercool, and Aquacomputer:

He does say though that in the end they all perform pretty much the same, so you can't really go wrong. Regardless best of luck to you

EK makes good blocks. That is what I have on my 7970s. I hate their new CSQ designs though.

As Masahiro said, you really can't go wrong with most blocks since they all preform pretty similarly.

Yeah I got the funky new design. I want to see it in person, if it works well I don't care what it looks like. I can't find any backplates in stock.

That's the backplate that they had issues with. If you look on EK's webpage thats the reason for the change in style of backplate to use with the CSL block.

Actually it seems it's been resolved...if you go through the cooling configurator I linked earlier for EK products, you'll see that there are two different SKUs for the 7970 backplate:

EK-FC7970 Backplate - Black [3831109856192]
EK-FC7970 Backplate - Black CSQ [3831109856727]

It seems the second one was discounted then discontinued, but the second is still available. I may be wrong on this though. I think you should be safe with ordering them. Regardless according to EK they will replace it free if it turns out your is defective, which is easy to check:

Attention all EK-FC7970 backplate users!
Dear customer, it has come to our recent attention that some EK-FC7970 backplates might have slipped into sales which may cause a damage to chips when forced upon the card during installation.

The proper safety distance should be higher to prevent this sort of issues. If you have already installed the card and have no problems, then do continue using backplate without worries. The safety distance can be checked visually. In case you have uninstalled "faulty" backplate do contact our support and we will have product replaced. Thank you.

If you do order it and want to check if it is faulty go over here:
http://www.ekwb.com/news/243/19/Attention-all-EK-FC7970-backplate-users/

And measure the depth at the point they're showing and see if it is at the right depth.
