It really looks like zen4 is fast and depending on the task a good chunk faster than zen3!. Fast RAM probably helps out on some tasks, but even outside of avx512, it does well and better power to work completed tuned down under 170 watts and more!

It really seems that the last 20% or a bit better of watts only gets at most 5% and often less work accomplished. Seems to be overclocked out of the box to just about the limits. Probably has taken some of the fun out of it for myself.... Haha, cry...

Very likely we will see similar power-performance efficiency improvement in epyc genoa but then my wallet will be come lighter and fly away ;)

ECC DDR5 RDIMM is not going to be cheap, at least for now and not to mention switching to a new platform.

So... I expect AMD to change the price on the 7950x soon. Or maybe hold out for the normal price reduction window that is Black Friday or so. Likely will drop to around $600 and stay there going forward.

AMD desktop motherboards are still priced high! With DDR5 coming down slowly......

The other AM5 cpus will drop in % price the same or likely more. They don't look to be price competitive at the moment. Most desktop CPUs don't run 24/7 and power won't matter as much to gamers and others as it does to D.c. by a large margin. For gaming a new 3D cache version will help AMD a great deal, so I expect to see them soon...

Maybe AMD cutting back on desktop CPUs will help some, but Intel wants to gain market share for awhile...

The new Raptor Lake series looks to be a great desktop CPU, and maybe help keep Intel around in the other close to desktop markets such as mobile / laptop. They are still hurting in server / cloud though!!!

Raptor lake is not good in perf/watt though. It brute forces performance so not good for compute if you're on a power budget.

That 5950X score is really low, my i5 10400F does OPN1 VUs in 1:40 and my PLs are at 70 watts. I have HT on, but set maximum cores to 50% so that HT shouldn't be used and extra threads are left to whatever else. There's no way 5950X is that slow.

I don't believe you. My 12700F at stock does them in about 2 hours with e-cores off. Thats 16 threads ! The same as a 5950x, slower than a 7950x. And here you can see 7950x in just over an hour ???

Makes sense:
10400F, only real cores, 70W --- 1h40m
12700F, all hyperthreads, stock --- 2h
