Option 3: search ebay for either of those 🙂

You mean one of those retired miners with fans already failing?
Those on ebay are cheap for a reaso, or you think there is a flood of gamers that jumped to R9 290s so "I just upgraded and the the old one has to go..."

7950 come slow out of the box due to a very low clock speed. It can easily run at 1ghz or more and match 7970 Ghz or R280X.

So its never worth it to pay what is in essence a ~40% premium (your price delta) for the R280X.

Get the asus r9 280 for $225 with 7% off w/ promo code EMCPAPH25, ends 9/8. Price after promo - $207.5 . There is also a $20 rebate card which takes the price below $190. Default boost clock is 980 Mhz which puts the perf on par with HD 7970 and well ahead of GTX 760. clock for clock R9 280 is 5% slower than R9 280X / HD 7970. This price is a steal for a card of this performance class.
