7950 GX2 or 7900GT SLI VModded?

The 7950GX2 would probably be easier going, provide more memory, and sit you with the potential to do Quad if your wallet ever got big enough. However, the 7900GT SLI option would have better aftermarket cooling methods, higher core frequencies, and would be able to split into two different systems if you ever wanted to keep extra cards around or provide computers for yourself or friends/family. However, it wouldn't have the extra memory.

Flip a coin.

It's a toss up. When I built my rig I had to choice.
How do you feel about vmodding?

Anyway There's always pro's and cons:
7950GX2:
-512MB of Vram (512 per card)
-Faster (then stock 7900GT's) since the interconnect is right there between the cards
-Some Overclock to 600/1600
-Expensive
-You want Quad SLI???

7900GT's in SLI:
-You can vmod them and basically get 2x7900GTX's with 256mb of vram
-"only" 256mb vram (not sure how that affects performance
-OC speeds ~650+/1600+
-YMMV
-It's at your own risk (there's really hardly any risk with at least the core vmod)
-etc.

I'd personally go for the GX2.
Less trouble, and you dont void your warranty like you would Vmodding a 7900 GT.
Also, as I've learned from using certain Oblivion texture mods.

Having 512mb vram really DOES help.

And if you want, you could also get another for QUAD SLI! WOOT! Another benefit of having the GX2 over the GTs!

2x7900 cost arount 450.
1x 7950 gx2 cost 550+

take your pick.
or you can witht the x1900xt (about 300 bucks) and entirely avoid the hassles of dual cards.

if you only want nvidia then i recommend the 2x7900gt.

I don't mean to be rude, but do you even bother to look up the stuff you post? The GX2 was $499 at newegg for only a very short time... Lately, when they've actually had them in stock, they've been closer to $550, than $500. This goes along the same lines as the 7900GT in SLI for $450 claim, which is pure fiction at this point.

7950GX2 all the way out of those two choices, 7900GTs are like tinderboxes waiting to explode with their 5% failure rate.

thats a good idea whats the specs and whens that coming?

I don't understand the reason behind a 7950GT release now. If G80 is out before November, what's the point?

From a performance standpoint the 7950GT isn't very interesting, but if it actually gets sold at the $299 MSRP indicated in the slides it would be the best bang for the buck out. If G80 launches way before R600, expect to see a repeat of the 7800GTX price scale. This launch caters to the more "frugal" high end gamer, whereas the G80 launch will be for the high-end, high dollar market.

...either that, or the 7950GT is just smoke and mirrors, and NV is ready to drop a G80 bomb on us from out of no where... Unlikely IMO, bit it would certainly put the game squarely in NV's favor.

7900GT's would be much louder. And not have 512MB usuable ram. And not the chance of the vmod killing the card a few months down the road, and voiding the warranty. Overall, Id say the GX2.

Damn, the EVGA 7950GX2 for $499 was a steal and so were the EVGA 7900GT 512mb for 299. I didnt realise, but you seem to imply that i dont look up the stuff i post in every single one of my posts.. lol

Maybe you should hold out til the 7950GTs like nitro suggested. Armed with 550mhz/1400mhz DDR3 512mb, plus the ability to put 3rd party cooling to OC even further.

Sorry, if that's how it came across. I've seen just a number of people talking about these awesome deals, and I haven't seen any recently. Maybe NV is winding down production on G71, or maybe people on the fence were waiting to see the results of the X1950XTX vs. 7950GX2 showdown before buying NVIDIA, but for whatever reason I think the availability of G71 parts has dried up a bit lately.
