Hey guys, I have a reference AMD HD 7950, from what I have researched the HD 7950 has:
Shaders: 1792
Texture Units: 112

in GPU-Z mine shows:
Shaders: 2048
Texture Units: 128

Is there a bug in GPU-Z, or do I have a "special" 7950? The card I have also has 6pin + 8pin for power.

Oooh, interesting. I know some MSI twin frozr cards had the 6+8pin and 7970 PCB, but supposedly they still DID NOT unlock shaders. I am not sure, what brand is it? Just AMD? Where did you get it?

They probably just sent you a 7970 by mistake or something weird.
Does it say 7950 on the box? count your blessing if its actually a 7970.

Finding out it is a bug in GPU-Z would be kinda a bummer.

Do some benchmark. Heaven or 3Dmark so we can see if it does better than a stock 7950

Those are 7950 clocks, the bios must be able to recognize the whole gpu if it's not lasered off. Which appears to be the case?

I actually got the card from a friend of a friend who works at AMD, so it just came in a sealed anti-static bag. On the back of the card there is a sticker that says 7950. I thought it was weird or a bug for sure, because the sticker says 7950, and the clocks are 7950, but it has the shaders and texture units of a 7970. Perhaps this was some sort of "engineering sample" type card, who knows!

However my issue\concern is that I'm using this in a Mac Pro 2009, which is very picky with cards that use more than 225Watts. So if this is a 7970 is disguise I'm scared I will fry the mobo\PSU, because the 7970 uses quite a bit more power than the 7950. Currently I'm using a 6 to 8 pin adapter to power the card.

Ill trade you an HD6970 :D

LOL, hopefully I have no issues, I just flashed the 7950 Boost BIOS since according to this article it has a TDP of 225watts, so I should be safe.

You might be safer with that stock bios. Using 800 core clock and , 1250 memory clocks, (what's shown in that gpu-z) that is definitely gonna pull less power than a boost bios.

Most boost bios's , up the voltage to 1.25 and clocks to 850-925.

You have increased your card's power draw.

I wouldn't change the bios, we aren't even sure what it is. I would just OC manually if possible with MSI AB or CCC. If you even want to OC that is.

Alot of 7950s say that on gpu-z. Mine included. It has been attempted to unlock those shaders, but to no avail. I wouldn't get your hopes up because its a common error.

Also, a 7950's chip is a 7970 chip with the shaders disabled, probably didn't quite make the cut. Sorry to kill off your hopes :(

darn, oh well performance of this card has been great, much better than the HD 4870 it replaced.
I'll flash the original BIOS back, since I can't have this thing drawing too much power.
