I been thinking of upgrading for along time, but I read that AMD is coming out with a new chipset the 890gx, before I saw the article about the 890gx chipset I was going to go with a combo of Athlon ii x4 620 and a 790GX. I will mainly use the computer for playing games like crysis, fallout, GTA those types of games. I do plan on getting a graphics card which one I don?t know I am thinking 4890 plus I like the sound of hybrid crossfire that comes with the GX chipsets.

1) My first question is that will the new 890gx be a good improvement that it is worth wait for.
2) Will the 890gx chipset support bulldozer or will AMD make a new socket for that
3) Does hybrid crossfire make a notable difference to game play

890GX will not be out till next year. Bulldozer will not be out till 2011. Hybrid CF only works with HD 3450 and HD 4350 (or something in that vein), and thus the performance difference is not something you should count on.

My answers are somewhat dry, I guess? ;)

well thats made me think again, damm you ati/amd for making hybird CF sound so cool

anys thax for the reply but as i said in question 1 is it worth waiting for or shall i go ahead with 790gx (or maybe fx now seeing that my dreams of hybrid CF are in tatters :( lol).

I mention the 790fx chipset because I was planning on adding one more 4890 when the other ones starts to lag behind and by then hopefully the six core thubun should be out :) so I can upgrade both at the same time.

I'd say it depends on what you have right now and will it hold you over until the 890s come out. and with the release of the 5800s recently, I might just get the new video card for right now and wait for the 890s, and if you current mobo is an am2+ maybe get a new am3 cpu. those CPUs will work in a AM2+ board and you should be able to transfer to the 890 once those come out.

The impression I am getting from your post is hold on until 890 chipset comes out, but the problem is that at the moment I am using a 4 year old laptop which has a 1.73Ghz intel processor at the hart of it and well lets not talk about the graphics. I was thinking of this mobo:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products...00-1800-SATA-3Gb-s-ATX

I don?t know much about the 790X chipset if someone could shed some light on it that would be very wellcome. Plus I can use this mobo until the 890 chipsets come out then sell this one and put the money too a new mobo.

James 1,

There hasn't been any talk or rumors of a 795GX chipset from AMD. 785G was a little surprise, as all anyone had heard up until the 785G broke into the public light was that AMD was going from 780G/790GX to the 800 series sometime end of this year, 1Q of '10.

Only you can decide if you can hold on and wait for the 800 series chipsets that will hit - estimated - in April/May/June.

If you do upgrade now, be sure to go with an AM3 CPU, motherboard, and DDR3 RAM. If you do this, you could enjoy your upgraded system until 800 series came out, stabilizes (stable BIOS's and drivers), and then just buy a 800 series motherboard and pop your existing AM3 CPU and DDR3 RAM in. Sell your 780G/790GX board for say $50 or so, and you'll likely be able to be able to pick up a 800 series motherboard for $50-$80 total end upgrade cost.

The main advantages of the 800 series are faster video, USB 3.0, and SATA 6.0Gbps. This is both a new Northbridge and a new Southbridge for AMD. Also, I think AMD will be delivering AMD LAN.

I said that not knowing what you had, and if what you have is only that laptop, then ya, i wouldn't wait unless i was low on cash. and that board seems fine, I am currently using an asus board myself. it's a M3A32-MVP Deluxe.

also, if you can afford it i'd go with the 790fx instead, just a few mor features and the ability to go X-fire later if you want to.

also I'd consider waiting on a new product like the 890 so the bugs can be worked out, maybe give 6 mo. to a year before getting that chipset.

Yeah that?s what I was thinking, buy the 795 chipset and wait 5 or 6 weeks after the 800 series comes out then may be buy a new mobo and GPU cause then the prices of those 5850 have bound to come down by then, and cause this is my first build I want to go with something that has been tried and tested.

Ok its come down to three mobos which I can?t choose over:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products...ATA-3Gb-s-RAID-ATX-VGA

I chosen this one because I read it?s a good overclocker and very durable due to the 2oz of copper

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products...-SATA-II-SATA-RAID-VGA

I only reason I put this into the mix is that its £5 cheaper and also it looks so cool lol.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/MSI-AM3-MOBO-790GX-G65

This is the main contender with the Gigabyte because the IGP is better and also it comes with crossfire X (which I will probably end up doing), but is that worth £15 extra.

Questions:

1) I am thinking of using 1600 MHz memory but on all of the mobos you have to oc to get that that kind of speed. Do you think for a first time noob this is easily achievable cause I don?t wanna put in the memory and configure the memory before I even put the OS on.
2) Which one of those Mobos give?s me the most features for OCing the CPU cause I plan to learn how to overclock.

Sorry man, I don't overclock, couldn't give you any real educated opinions on that.

I'd not get caught up in the marketing type stuff like 2oz copper, super g-spot overlocking tool, etc. etc. If you're only going to be using the 785G or 790GX until the 800 series comes out in a few months, then just get a solid cheap board and be done with it. The Gigabyte 785G board w/ 128MB onboard RAM for video (careful, there's a Gigabyte 785G that is basically the same, but w/ no onboard RAM) looks good, even if it's mATX - think about it, do you really]/i] need all those expansion slots?

If I had to buy a board today, I think that's the one I'd get.

Ok dudes made my mind up over the mobo well kind of, here are the two mobos its come down to:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/170277 asus-785g

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/160994 asrock-790gx

I am still thinking is the asrock worth that £14 more, because it ends up that I might not be doing the crossfire setup until the 890gx/890fx chipsets come out, but the asrocks IGP is better, AHHHHHHH can?t make my mind up

Also do you think in hybrid crossfire a 3850 is better than a single 4850?

Finally can someone please answer these questions:

Not according to rumor mills. It's supposed to be only 15% faster than current gen.

Remember how 785G brought low-single digit performance improvements over 780G.

Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X Socket AM3

IIRC hybrid crossfire with a 3850 is not possible --- and it would not be more powerful than the HD4850, anyway.
