7900GTX vs. 7950 GT KO

I recently sent my eVGA 7900GTX for RMA under warranty due to artifact problems (i.e. it was slowly dieing). I just got an email that my replacement card has shipped, a 7950 GT KO Superclocked. Now I'm pretty sure from comparing the specs on the two cards that I'm getting a slower card back. I'm just not sure how much of a difference it really is, and if it's worth complaining about.

Old Card
eVGA 7900 GTX EGS
650 MHz Clock
512 MB 256-bit 1.2ns (16x32) GDDR3 Memory
800 MHz Clock - 1600 MHz Effective
51.2 GB/second memory bandwidth

Replacement Card
eVGA 7950 GT KO Superclocked
600 MHz Clock
512 MB 256-bit 1.4ns (8x64) GDDR3 Memory
725 MHz Clock - 1450 MHz Effective
46.4 GB/second memory bandwidth

I will say I'm not a mega-gamer - I mostly play WoW, and I have an NEC 20WMGX2 monitor (thanks to the reviews I read here!). I was considering upgrading both the monitor and the card later this year if NEC comes out with a 24" monitor.

Anyhow, I can see that all the numbers are lower/slower - any input on whether I should request a better card as a replacement? Or are the differences very small, and I should just be happy I have a non-artifacting video card?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I highly doubt you will even notice a difference imo.

Well, I didn't really think I'd see a difference. I mean, I can install it and see if I get the same FPS as before.

I guess I had hoped to get the same card back, or a slightly better one. Most people seem to get an upgrade if anything. I'll probably just post on the eVGA boards and see what they have to say.

Oh, and the new card doesn't look anywhere near as cool as the 7900GTX! :)

edit: Well, apparently people are getting 7900GTX's from eVGA when they send in 7900GT's, so I think I'll request a 7900GTX replacement. I had assumed (incorrectly) that there were simply no 7900GTX's left.

I sent in my 7900GT in for artifact issues and got a 7900GTO back. Got a nice upgrade :)... Now my problem is finding a second one to go along with this one. Apparently no one sells the EVGA 7900GTO anymore :( Anyone have any ideas where I could find a second one? Preferably an EVGA? Would it be possible to pair it with a GTX?

EDIT:

Also, you probably will not be able to notice any difference in the performance between the two. Although the 7900GTX beats the 7950 in most games it's only by a few FPS. This can be pretty much taken care of with a little OC. Not to mention it's cheaper than the 7900GTX so you can go SLI more easily now.

I just wanted to post a follow-up. After a few people said that the 7950GT wasn't an appropriate replacement for the 7900GTX I called eVGA yesterday. I got a return call from their RMA department today, and they are going to ship me a card that is a much more suitable replacement. I got the impression the 7950GT was shipped in error, so I'm glad I asked a few questions.

Thanks for the feedback here, and I can say that eVGA has very good customer service with regard to it's RMA process.

Did you ask them which card you're actually getting?

I'm not sure what they mean by "much more suitable".

My 7950GT is clocked up to 7900GTX speeds. Easily. Great card. :)

Sorry, "much more suitable" was my wording not theirs - I'm hesitant to name the model because over on the eVGA boards there is a lot of griping about who got a better card with their RMA. Plus I think eVGA was being extra nice due to the wrong card being sent out and all. I'll just say it's a top-of-the-line 7950 card and leave it at that. :)
