If you want play all games like COD2 and FEAR at 4AA/16AF, most likely. I would recommend to not buy top of the line since you can just get 7900GT for $320 and overclock it. The performance increase will be tremendous without spending extra $200 for top of the line. Otherwise, I'd go with X1900XT for $440 and overclock it to XTX speeds. It'll be faster than 7900GTX 512mb in COD2 and FEAR and have better AF quality while costing $60 less. Imo 7900GT/X1800XT will be able to play majority of games at 1280x1024 4AA/16AF. I am not sure it's worth to pay $150+ to be able to play all games at smoothest frames though.

Yes, you have to buy it. I play at 1280x960, and the x1900xt definitely makes a big difference when you turn up all the eye candy in games like FEAR, COD2, SS2, and probably even more so in future games.

Reviews disagree with you. The XTX and GTX both are pretty close in most games. Q4 is faster on the GTX. Take into account that the X1900's are cheaper, and as you say, have eye candy, it seems like an easy choice.

Some good and some bad. I ordered an Opteron 165 from them that I needed ASAP and 4 days later it still hadn't shipped. I cancelled. I ordered an Opteron 170 from them on Thursday 2-day FedEx and it arrived on Saturday morning.

That reminds me... I blasted Monarch on Pricegrabber for not shipping my order. I'm going to have to go over there and commend them on getting my 2nd one there so quickly. *Makes mental note*

Don't forget to tell him that the X1900 is noisier also.....;)

I think that these cards (7900GTX or X1900XT) are overkill at 1280x1024.
He can do great with a 7900GT or X1800XT.

These cards are not overkill for 1280x960 or higher in FEAR. The x1900xt gets like average 70 fps at max settings, but the min fps still dips into the 30's. In a slower card the min fps would be even worse.

I generally play with max settings at 1280x960 or 1600x1200 with my X1800XT 512MB. If you get a X1800 or X1900 series, just budget in an Accelero X2 with the purchase. So quiet...

For me, the service is atrocious at best. Ordered 7900GT on 3/9, wasnt shipped out by 3/14 (Tuesday), so I cancelled my order and bought an X1900XT from the egg (which I recieved Thursday). It's now 3/24 (10 days later) and I still dont have the money credited to my account. According to the sales person, it takes an average of "10-15 days" to credit your account if you cancel an order. Needless to say, Monarch is never getting my business again.

Simple answer: X1900 XTX.

nah, X1900XT :D

No sense in spending extra cash needlessly, just get an XT for around $440.

Either way it's the best choice ;) My XTX runs Oblivion beautifully with max IQ ini tweaks, I love it.

When cross shopping between X1800XT 512mb and similarly priced 7900GT OC (550/1500) consider this review LINK

Far Cry - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
X1900XT = 82.5
7900GT OC = 76.7
X1800XT 512mb = 77.9

FEAR - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
X1900XT = 69
7900GT OC = 60
X1800XT 512mb = 63

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
X1900XT = 75.5
7900GT OC = 70.8
X1800XT = 63.6

Call of Duty 2 - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
X1900XT = 36.8
7900GT OC = 22.7 (weird result because stock 7900GT gets 30.9 frames)
X1800XT = 34.4

HL2 - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
X1900XT = 89
7900GT OC = 89.3
X1800XT 512mb = 87.1

Doom 3 - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
X1900XT = 81.4
7900GT OC = 85.5
X1800XT 512mb = 75.4

Chronicles of Riddick - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
X1900XT = 58.7
7900GT OC = 78.2
X1800XT = 47.3

So for 1280x1024 7900GT or X1800XT 512mb seem adequate (perhaps if you play online the difference in minimum framerates might be more important). I would either get cheapest 7900GT and overclock it past 550/1500 (you can for sure get faster than 1500 on memory). Again if you value AF quality, and will not overclock, there is no question that X1800XT is a better card. Certainly a $300 7900GT card is more appealing than $400+ high end cards if you are not going to be playing beyond 1280x1024.

For NOW, X1800XT is adequete @ 1280x1024. However, in games like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (NOW) and UT2007 (later this year) I wouldnt be surprised if you're looking at X1900XT being 50% faster, even @ 1280x1024, than the X1800XT.

EDIT: Man, I finally see what people are talking about when they say the X1900XT is like a jet! Have had the fans set @ 100% for the last few minutes and while the thing now idles at around 40C and I want to see how much it gets under load, I dont think I could survive with this thing for long. My ACF 64 Pro @ 100% is way quieter than this!
