7900GTX in SLI, which DVI port to use?

Using 2 BFG 7900GTX OC cards in SLI. On boot, the display either receives no signal or shows a blue windows background with nothing but the mouse cursor (as if I was looking at a secondary monitor of a stretched desktop). The PC is still working and I can move the DVI connector to the other card and the picture comes in. But the next boot will be the same problem, alternating between the blank screen or windows screen.

This Windows XP SP2 system is a newly installed system using older 81.90 drivers, after the 2 most recent drivers caused endless lockups. Each card has 2 DVI ports, so which is the right one to use?

81.90 drivers?
Time to update. If it crashes with newer drivers then there is a problem that needs fixing.
