7900GT SLi better than 7800GTX SLi?

Hey guys, I currently have a 7800GTX. I'm wanting to upgrade in the video department. I'm trying to figure out if I should purchase another 7800GTX or sell it and go for 7900GT SLi. According to a good number of people, 7900GT SLi is the best solution for the most bang for the money. A 7900GT SLi upgarde would cost me about 700.00. Another eVGA 7800GTX is about 400.00-450.00. I figured I could sell my 7800GTX for at least 200.00-225.00 and I wouldn't be to far in the whole for the 7900GT SLi setup. What do you guys think I should do? Any help on this would be great.

Yes, not only that, 7900Gt's in SLI could be faster than stock 7900GTX's in SLI if overclocked right.

Thought about that also. You have any issues with the GX2? Drivers for it working properly?

Not sure what review it was of the 7950GX2, but it showed that the 7900GT SLi scaled better. Gonna look for it again for confirmation, it's in this forum somewhere.

Thanks for the input guys

If you vmod the 7900GT SLI it will clearly beat the 7950GX2.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Well u can overclock the 7950gx2 afair bit as well , ive got mine at 600 / 1450 and it has no problems.. theres xfx ones that r like 670 / 1500 which would prolly beat a volt modden gt set up...

You can get 7900GT SLI for $480 after MIR, then sell your 7800GTX for 200 and it should only cost you $280. Volt mod them with two VF700s for $27 each and you have 7900GTX SLI right there.

except when you consider that 7900GTs, of vmodded, can get up to nearly 2ghz mem clock. oops...

Is it just me, or will a 7800GTX run games at 1600x1200 absolutely fine? Or are you looking to pile on the AA?

kman79, have you considered an X1900XT?

For less than $400 from Newegg, it's a very good high end bang for the buck.

Of course, if you prefer to stick with NV that's up to you. Just thought I would throw that in as something to consider.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

First off, I have considered the XTX, bit I have an nForce board, so I'm not too sure how much the board and GPU would like each other.

Oh and the 7800GTX struggles to push 30FPS in Graw at medium settings at 1600X1200. He has to play it at 1280X1024 to get good FPS. At that resolution, their are jaggies everywhere.

I think I should mention that this box that I'll be upgrading is going to be my little brother's box in the next week or so. I'll be moving out and I just wanted him to have a setup that he doesn't need to spend money on anymore to get the performance he wants. He's starting college and I don't want him working so he keeps his head into books. I know what you guys are saying, if you want him to study why give him a great toy. Well, he averages two hours a day at most on the PC, at least this way it's an enjoyable two hours.

If I was confident in my soldering skills I would definately vold mod the 7900GTs, but I'm not and I don't want to risk loosing a couple hundred dollars worth of PC hardware because of my stupidity. But if I was able to actually vold mod it, man, that would be a great setup.

It's really a choice between a 7900GT SLi setup and the 7950GX2. One good thing about the the GX2 setup is that there is a chance I can upgrade to SLi if nVidia decides on allowing it.

I'll be building my own Rig built around the Conroe and the Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard. I'm undecided on the graphics solution for that build also.

Choosing a graphics card is getting to be a very tedious task. It seems nVidia is almost competing with itself in a way. Nothing wrong with Ati either, Ive just been using nVidia cards in the last few years I'm just more comfortable with them. Googling for some more comparisons between the 7900GT SLI and 7950GX2 setup. If anyone has any benchmarks that shows a clear winner, please do post it. Thanks for the input guys

how the hell is having a 7800GTX not enjoyable :\

HAHA, well it is enjoyable. I just don't want him wanting another video card and having to find a job, cause if he's anything like me, once I see money start rolling in, I tend to put school down in the list of my priorities. It took me long enough to finish and I would rather have him finish sooner than later. Trust me, he's not spoiled. He knows that if I see a C at the end of the semester as one of his grades, the computer is coming with me next sem.

I mean, GRAW is still playable. I just know he's wanting to be able to run it at the native resolution of the monitor and without the jaggies. There is no AA option in GRAW

They get along fine, no issues here with an A8N-SLI Premium.

I doubt that quad-SLI will be possible in that motherboard. I would imagine that you would need to have either an nForce4 SLI X16 or nForce 590 SLI in order to do quad.

The 7950GX2 uses the same ram as 7900GT. GDDR3 rated at 1.4ns hence a theorectical speeds of 1400mhz which is quite possible.

I suggest the 7950GX2 because it only takes two slots like the 7900GTX while providing you with 512mb GDDR3 for graphic intense games. Consumes less power because it uses G71M chips i think it was. (i think reviews show you this).

If you OC the core to 550mhz, you pretty much get 7800GTX512mb SLi performance.

Non of the adformentioned cards are worth the price to upgrade to from a 7800GTX sli setup. There is soo much around the corner, and besides the only thing that strains a 7800GTXsli setup is Oblivion...a game which all Nvidia cards suck on(compaired to X1900XT crossfire).
