hi
I am running a p4 3.2 775 cpu
2.5gb ram
windows xp
with an evga 7900gt 512mb pci-e card
dell 2001fp
using the latest nvida drivers (6.14.11.7516)
(let me know if you need more info)

I just bought this card going from a 6600gt set up...

and i must say i think there is something wrong with it
gpu-z says the core clock should be
560mhz and the ram at 755(x2) however
it only runs according to gpu-z sensor and nvidia monitor at 450 core and 660 ram
even if i try to OC the OC only lasts for 5 minutes or less very odd my temps are around 38C idle and like 41C with a zalman cooler so thats not the problem

now on to the benchmarks 3dmark05 is 6000ish and 3dmark06 is less than 4700 total
also tests done at 1024x768 and everything else deafult and most games like farcry wolfenstein ET auto detect my graphics setting to low that cannot be right

I have trying uninstalling reinstalling the drivers and the card no help
any ideas

TBH I don't have any great ideas (but better than none!) ,does everything look OK in the device manager?

Does it throttle back in 2D ? Or are those the clocks in 3D ?

those are the 3d speeds I was using GPU-z to measure the clock speeds during gaming and 3dmark05 and if it was only slowing down in 2d mode my proformance and scores wouldn't be so low
as for older drivers no where can I download some

Ugh.
Stock clocks for a 7900GT is:
450 Core.
660 (1320) Memory

Check your product manual/box and see if it comes factory OC'd.

Also GPU-Z reads the clock speeds from drivers/card bios (not 100% which). This is what my 7900GT says and matches with what my card is.

I wish wizard (guy who does gpu-z) would use a database for the default clocks for cards instead of relying on driver/card bios. If you ask me default clock should be 450/660 and gpu clock should be what you have it running at.

okay even if that's what it should be at stock why are my benchmarks and default game settings so poor
and on tomshardware GPU charts it says the core should be 560 where do you see the stock as being 450 that's a big difference 20%...

Yep, stock speeds for 7900gt are 450/660 (chart). Are you trying to OC with Rivatuner or what? What happens when you overclock?

EDIT: If you look at Tom's Hardware VGA Charts you will see the 7900GT listed as 520/1500 which means they have either OC'd or have a factory OC'd card running above stock speeds. You will also note that it only gets about 2600 points in 3d06 so you're already ahead in the game if you're getting 4700 points in the same benchmark.

Actually Tomshardware lists their GPU benchmark at 520/750. THG, which was what they listed on the chart when they OC'd it. This is one of many reasons of why I don't like their charts and articles, most of it is poorly written and skewed.

Knock yourself out here for reliable info:
7900GT Information

What games?
What resolution?
AA/AF?
Game Settings?
Benchmarks? If these happen to be like 3Dmark, fuck 3Dmark; it's crap and doesn't ever translate into real world performance.

Open GPU-Z, take print screen (alt+print screen), paste it into paint/photoshop/whatver, upload to tiny pic, and post the link here, so I can see it.

Yep, here's link to their review of a 7900GT.
XFX 7900GT

**Edit 2**
Ugh, fuck THG and their shitty site search, I had to use google to find it, because all their site search would find it their gallery images of the card.

**Edit 3**
Omg, I read the article and now I am seriously confused, first they say the card is 550/815 then on the first benchmark page they say 675/815, then on the GPU charts they say 520/750.

Short: THG Sucks for information.

1. Those scores are NORMAL for a 7900GT in your system.

2. Game tests are not accurate for every setup. The tests said the same thing for my 7900GT, and they meant nothing. Play the actual game and boost the settings and watch as the performance remains.

There's no problem at all here. 450/660 IS stock. Getting 4700 in 3dmark suggests you're NOT running stock speeds, but faster.

To more accurately view your card's clock speeds for 2D and 3D, run NiBitor and query the card's BIOS. That will tell you exactly what speeds the card is going to run at.

As for overclocking, heat isn't everything of course. There are other issues that can limit your overclock well before heat becomes an issue, and heat isn't your problem in this case.

okay thanks for all the help but to answer the 3dmark score of 4700 that's the total score on toms they get 2600 for one part of the test and for that part I get 2000 and even if 450 is stock but my card bios say 560 meaning its oced my the company then there is still something wrong since it isn't running at the factory oc rate... Anyone know of a good benchmark or way to test it because people with similar system get more 3dmarks but someone here said that's a crappy benchmark
and one last thing this videocard should outpreform my 6600gt sli setup I had before and it doesnt seem like it does

How do you know?
When are you going to do what I said and answer all my questions?
Also how about listing exact card model?

We can't help if you aren't going to provide us with more information.

Just one last thing, load up 3Dmark06 and see if the clock speeds rise.

If it doesn't I'd have to agree, there is something wrong with the card. RMA it or try to get a refund.
