7900gt pci e power supply question

Hi guys, thanks for your time, i'm putting together a new rig and was just wondering whether or not i should get a new power supply thta has the pci express power cable, or save the money and buy the pci e cable adapter for the 420watt power supply that came with my case. I am not sure if the power is enough for c2d 6400, corsair 1gig (512x2) ddr2 800, 250gig sata2 hdd, 7900gt 256mb, and a samsung dvd burner. thanks again

QFT. The 7900GTO is definately better than a 7900GT for almost the exact same price.

For your PSU, depends on how many amps it puts out on the +12v (and if it is decent quality). You'll want at least 20A just to be on the safe side.

I got an OCZ Modstream 520W, and it works like a dream. It will support my soon to be put in 7950GT (noone scream 'GTO!!!!one!!' at me, gotta get single slot cooling).

420w is plenty enough for 7900 gt and c2d since they draw very little power but that's if and only if your psu is a quality one

my antec 380w was powering my amd x2 overclocked clock along with a X1900XT!

the 7900gt based on power measurements at load, could probably run without a pci-e connector if it were designed to just draw off the motherboard. its a very low power card at stock.

any atx 2.0 compliant dual rail 12v psu shoudl be fine. some older psu's that are say "450 watts" do not even have the 12v rail amperage of a new 250 watt atx 2.0 power supply. so check yours. new 250/300 watts atx 2.0 supplies have a combined 22 amps on 12v minimum to be compliant. a 450 watt antec atx 1.2 for example only has 20 watts total
