7900GT or X1900XT for gaming on 19" LCD?

I have a BUDGET Qpack system (specs below) that I'd like to turn into a GAMING sys, if possible. I would game at 1280x1024 on my Viewsonic 19" LCD VP191b.

Would a X1900XT be overkill? Or should I just go with a cheaper 7900GT? Looking forward to playing BF2142 with this PC.

Specs:
AM2 Sempron 3100+ @ 2.6GHz (woohoo! stock is 1.6GHz)
Biostar AM2 6100
1GB OCZ DDR2 PC5300
WD 200GB IDE 7.2k 8MB

EDIT: I picked up the Acer 22" WS at MicroCenter yesterday... haven't opened it yet. Res is 1680x1050. Slight buyer's remorse, might return it.

EDIT: I will now be selling my 19" LCD and keeping my new Acer 22" WS LCD. The 7900GT should run cooler, but the X1900XT should push alot more frames and eyecandy.

Depends on what you're playing. I used to play all my games just fine at 1280x1024 with my 7900GT. It's still running strong with my 27" Viewsonic HDTV.

just make sure your PSU is up[ to the task.
also the x1900xtx is not overkill for 1280x1028 if you trythe newer games like oblivion.

Since I was looking at buying used vidcards... I can get a 7900GT for $200 and a X1900XT 512MB which OC's to XTX speeds easily for about $270.

I only play FPS's and maybe some strategy and sports games, no Oblivion-like games.

Dang, can't decide if to keep this 22" Acer... if I open it, MicroCenter hits me with a 15% restocking fee!

First off let me just say that the x1900xt runs really hot (seen it hit close to 90C, so tweak the fans if you get it) and needs a good PSU. That's pretty much the only negative thing with it but you should be aware.

For FPS like BF2 a x1900xt is overkill. I pretty much peg at 100fps no matter what and I play at 1600x1200 at the highest possible settings. Even if BF2142 is more demanding I can't imagine it dropping below 70fps.

Other games though, especially Oblivion, are much more demanding. Games like Company of Heroes (good game btw) is pretty damn demanding and I've had to lower some settings to keep the min and average fps up to speed. Granted I'm playing at 1900x1200 but still...I've already seen this card get pushed.

If you can afford it, get the x1900xt. It's awesome. Defintely get 2GB of RAM too. That makes a huge difference in a game like BF2. Smooth as silk with it, a bit of a stutter with 1GB.

i just recieved my 7950gt and i love it. (i also got 3 free games with it :) )

i use this card with a 19" BenQ @ 12x10 res. I run all games max'd with great frames (excluding oblivion).

If you can fit in the XFX 7950gt in your case you would have one badass SILENT micro pc.

Yeah, what I really want to do is swap out my CPU & mobo for a Conroe setup... just waiting for a good overclocking micro ATX Conroe board to come out, then I'll drop a E6300 in it.

I decided to keep my new Acer 22" WS LCD. The 7900GT should run cooler, but the X1900XT should push alot more frames and eyecandy. Now to find a good deal, used is fine.

"should push alot more frames and eyecandy."

That's a bit of an exgeration. The 1900XT needs more power, your PSU is? It's louder, hoter and more expensive. The 7900GT can also OC by massive amounts with little effort. They are both great cards, but you have to analyze the bang for the buck.

I just want a comfortable gaming experience at 1680x1050. If an OC'd 7900GT will supply that, great, I save some bucks.

Crap, totally forgot about power... I'm running an Aspire 420w PSU. Will need to replace that soon.

I would definatly get a better power supply, STAT. My Aspire 500w crapped out on me after a year running a rig almost like the one in my sig now. The 6800GT had been there from the start, but I ran an Athlon XP 3000+, then a Sempron 3100+, then upgraded to the 3400.
