Neither. Save up and get an X1900XT, since an X1800XT or a 7900GT won't give you much more performance.

 The x1900xt is a beast and generally cheaper than the 7900gtx and can perform very competitively with it. Your 7800gt is fine for what you're doing with it. I would actually just slap on a nice zalman vf700 or vf900 on your card and OC the hell out of it for now. I would only recommend that you upgrade if you're gonna play something seriously graphic-intensive, like Oblivion.

the eVGA 7800gt CO is nearly identical in performance to a stock 7800gtx=7900gt stock

i agree with what other members have already posted stick with your 7800gt and OC it,
my 7800gt does 490/1200 without a hitch, i'm sure you can get much higher than the factory OC.

Battlefield 2 2048x1536x32 4xAA/16xAF

X1800XT : 70.3FPS
7900GT : 31.7FPS

way to spin things into making lodmdma make a poor decision. 1280x1024 =! 2048x1536. @ 1280x1024 the only game that is going to really bring your video card to its knees would be Oblivion.

The real difference is X1800XT: 116FPS vs. 7900GT 86.2FPS, granted the X1800XT is clearly faster, and with minimum frame rate of the 7900GT being 60FPS, the difference could pretty much be negligable depending upon how picky you are. (hmm, now that I look at that article, something isn't right. They post Max and Min FPS of BF2 @ 1280x1024, however the max is lower than the number in the graph for 1280x1024 for both the 7900GT and X1800XT, fishy...)

I'd suggest waiting and saving up for next gen.

You could check out the Hot Deals section for a special ATI promo code and end up with a 512MB Saphire X1800XT for ~$266

HOWEVER, since lodmdma already has a 7800GT, I'd say it would be pretty silly to spend money on a video card if other areas could be upgraded first - things such as a faster CPU (perhaps upgrading to dualcore, although I wouldn't recommend it for gaming, just for the more powerful CPU if you can use it) or perhaps more ram (which could really help out a game such as BF2.

Unless you think you can sell off the 7800GT without much problem and the rest of your system isn't really lacking, then by all means, go with the 512MB X1800XT deal as there is evidence that suggests you'd see a performance boost.

I agree with everyone saying that you won't see much performance gain at that resolution. If you want to future proof your setup wait until next generation and then snag an x1900xt (should be $300 by then).

On BF2 at 1280x1024, neither of those cards would show a worthwhile improvement.

I'd personally wait for G80 or R600, since they will be DX10 parts. I'm upgrading to an X1800XT from a 6600GT right now, but if i had something like you have right now, id definitely wait. I dont see much of a point upgrading your 7800GT, a 7900GT might be like 15% faster, maybe the X1800XT will be like 20-25% faster (talking stock speeds, not including OCing). I generally dont upgrade till i can get something twice as fast for the same cost as the last thing i bought, or at least something that brings substantial feature benefits (i.e. DX10 compliance, HDR, something like that). The upgrade you're considering doesnt even come close to accomplishing either, so it just seems gratuitous.

X1800XT easily. You could more than likely get playable frames with 6xAA, and have HQ AF to boot. Something NV cant offer. Better looking, and faster, seems like an easy choice to me.

If all you play is BF2, then a 7800gt is adequate for that game. For other games, even at 1280 resolution the x1800xt would provide a nice boost. I'm playing at 1280 res with a x1900xtx, and still I would not say the card is overkill for that resolution in modern games.

If you can SLI get another 7800, otherwise save your money for the next gen cards which will be out this year.

Just keep the 7800gt, wait till next gen card will come out, at this point there is not much point upgrading unless u want extreme resolutions and have too much money :p

I hate to hijack the thread, but after seeing those Hot Deals posts on the X1800/X1900 cards earlier, I'm seriously considering an upgrade right now (even though I probably really shouldn't).

I'm on an AGP 6800GT right now and I'm torn between the X1800XT for $250 and the X1900XT for $385 or so. I've been looking at benchmarks and I can see several situations where the X1900XT has a pretty good lead over the X1800XT...but my question is (and this is obviously a matter of opinion; I just want to see what people think) - is the X1900XT worth the ~$140 higher cost (would work about to be twice the out-of-pocket cost after I sell my current card)? I play games at 1680x1050 (or at least I used to, back when my 6800GT could handle it...).

Thanks for any input...

$385 for an x1900xt is ridiculously cheap. I'd say if you're going to keep the card for a while then the x1900xt is worth the extra cost. But if you upgrade every 6-12 months then a x1800xt should last you that long without too much trouble, and you keep the $140.

With your graphics card, both are a complete waste of $. Wait for G80 or R600. Plus, 7800GT OC should be giving you stable 60fps at your resolution already. Which means on a 60hz LCD, any additional frames are just wasted.

Thanks for your input. I keep bouncing back and forth between that opinion (that it'll be much better in the long run) and the opinion that I should just save $140 and get the X1800XT (which would still be a large performance jump over my 6800GT, which struggles quite a bit these days :p).

I can't really afford to upgrade every year, much less every 6 months, so I'm thinking the extra money for the X1900XT would be well spent...
